The whole cafeteria had gone silent, and I was lost for words. Before I could regain myself, Knox already turned as he walked away.

I hurried after Knox with my heels clicking against the floor. “Mr. Grey!” I called, my voice a little louder than I intended.

He didn’t stop as he continued taking long strides to his office.

“What was that back there?” I asked when I finally entered the office with him. “You just fired him—in front of everyone.”

His eyes narrowed a little. “Do you have a problem with how I handle my company, Miss Lane?”

I hesitated, every instinct screaming at me to shut up, but my mouth refused to listen. “It just… it seemed harsh. Caleb didn’t mean any harm.”

Knox’s jaw tightened. “He touched what he shouldn’t have. And you,” he said, his gaze dropping to my hand, “should go wash his scent off.”

For a second, I thought I’d misheard. “His scent?” I repeated quietly.

His eyes were dark, cold, and unreadable. “You heard me.”

“You can’t be serious—”
