Chapter Forty-Four

Alina’s POV

It was the weekend and I was supposed to meet with Clara, I needed her help with something.

It had to do with meeting the French men. I didn't get to finish that thought because of my phone vibrating in my hand. I opened the message and read it.

It was from Clara, she was spending the weekend at her boyfriend’s place and wanted me to know that something came up and she couldn't make it anymore.

I quickly started texting her a message telling her not to worry, that I was going to be fine and I told her to take care of herself too. After reading it a few times I pressed 'Send'. As I placed my phone next to me, I couldn't help but feel slightly disappointed.

I was out of my favorite snack and I decided that a little shopping wouldn't hurt so pulling out my jacket from where it hung behind the chair of the restaurant, I headed towards the door to go for a walk. In all, I didn't come with my car.

The air outside was cool and refreshing, as usual. When I stepped foot outside the restaurant it hit me that this was probably the first time I was actually free from everything bothering me.

I decided that I would stroll to the closest grocery shop instead of taking a cab so I headed down the street, the cold air hitting my skin, making my cheeks feel warmer already.

I couldn’t understand why there were so many people in the supermarket. It was the weekend but why did there have to be so many?

And there were so many kids running around, screaming happily.

I was sure that there must be a lot of adults in line because the noise level was getting higher and higher each second.

I tried to ignore them as I moved down the line, searching for the ingredients for my favorite soup,it was my mom’s recipe.

Something caught my eyes, someone.

Standing at the farthest end of where the children were playing was a man in a facecap, he was built the same way the same only one person I knew was, the same way Victor was. Maybe my eyes were playing silly tricks on me.

He was staring straight at me, making me shiver involuntarily. I couldn't see him from here but his stance was confident, his hands hidden inside the pocket of his trousers ,his eyes focused on me.

That was creepy.

Maybe it was the weather. That was a good excuse after all , maybe the chilliness from outside got to my bones. I made myself relax as if I was trying to convince myself that nothing was wrong but I knew better.

So stepping back gradually while trying to shake off the weird atmosphere that had suddenly settled in my chest.

I made it through the line in a hurry.

As I made my way to the cashier, I tried to push away the strange feeling that was growing inside me, it wasn’t real, it mustn't be real. I don’t want to acknowledge the fact that he was there or at least that's what I was telling myself. But even I could see how my mind was playing tricks on me, my heartbeat quickening every minute or so.

My palms got clammy and my pulse was throbbing in my ears. I had to force myself to stop trembling.

Once I'd paid for my purchase I tried my hardest not to think about him anymore.

I rushed outside not watching where I was going, I bumped into someone, luckily I was able to keep balance as I apologized to the person in front of me.

However, once I looked up at them it became clear who it was.

There stood Sebastian Wolfe and holding both of my sides and I realized that I was not able to keep my balance,it was because he saved me.

“This is becoming a routine,” He said. I could swear he sounded amused “You always fall against me whenever you come outside.”

“Well that's because you're standing here blocking the way. Why are you following me everywhere I go?” I tried not to snap at him.

As usual, he didn't respond but chuckled lightly while pulling away to make sure I was stable.

“Sorry” I mumbled apologetically.

“Don't apologize to me when it's my fault”

“I have to go” I told him, trying to brush it off once I remembered the man inside.

I started to walk away but he pulled me back by my hand and I was forced to take my gaze away from our joined hands, trying to ignore the tingling sensation that had spread across my arm.

We both looked at each other for a moment before he spoke:

“Where are you rushing off to?”

“Home” I replied.

“Walk with me Alina.”

“No Sebastian.”

“That's quite unfortunate. Wouldn't you want to be a lovely wife, give the media something to feed on?” He asked. “Take this as your way of saying thank you to me,” he added.

I thought of it, not sure of what to say, he was correct so I took a deep breath and nodded, not trusting myself to speak and secretly hoping that I was making the right decision and I wanted to be sure if that man I had seen earlier was truly following me.

I noticed that he was wearing a face cap and I couldn't understand why but I ignored it.

Sebastian Wolfe surprised me by taking one of the groceries bags from me and we started walking.

I was grateful but somehow still scared.

I was looking behind me, trying to be sure that we were not being followed.

He walked beside me the entire time, quietly and looking like he was lost in thought.

And I didn't disturb the silence.

“Will you tell me why you keep looking behind?”

“I am trying to be sure you don't have plans on killing me” I joked.

“Out here in the open? I am not so silly Alina.”

“I need your help.”

But the voices in my head were active. “Alina, are you even listening to me?” One snapped, pulling further into my thoughts.“Who?” I asked, confused. I knew who it asked for, and I knew what it was talking about but trust me when I say no one wanted their fears to be confirmed.“That’s what I was wondering” another sighed. “What if it was ” it repeated its question. I could imagine the voice as that of a lean woman, staring at me with crossed her arms and warm amber eyes piercing through the bottom of my soul and trying to figure me out but I looked away immediately. The hair in my arms stood involuntarily at the mention of his name, causing my whole body to tense up. I remembered the last time. I was giving him more power than necessary. He still managed to b

Sebastian’s POV “What is this madness?” One of the men yelled, he was staring at me with cold icy eyes, and his accent was heavy.“What does it look like? Be patient and watch.” I responded calmly, although I really wanted to tear them into pieces. When the video finished playing, they both turned to me, faces white as paper, their mouths agape. I could have sworn that their hearts skipped a few beats when the video played the first time. Then one of them looked at the other, he gave him a slight nod as if he had just completed some kind of mission. The one called Pierre cleared his voice. “What do you want?”he asked. He didn't seem so confident now. In fact he seemed downright scared. But what was there to be afraid of, he thought. I’m not going to kill you or anything, so calm down. Calm down.“Well, first of all, you need to answer a question for me” A smirk appeared on my face. The man looked surprised but nodded in agreement. “Did you really think you could get away with hara

Sebastian’s POV “The French men, they molested me” The words fell off her lips and I could feel the blood rushing to my face, though there was no emotion on her face. This was a mistake, I must have misheard. It couldnt be possible. All I saw was red. I was angry and sad and confused and scared. I couldn't remember why I had felt these things, but I remembered those words very cleary. Those words were engraved into my mind, they found a way to keep themselves in my memory. It played on a loop in my mind, the image of her lying broken and bleeding on the floor, the smell of her fear in my nostrils, her broken soul. It felt like I could remember her, more like sew every single detail, the sound of her screams, and every single word she screamed. The way her eyes were wide open and full of fear as she tried to call for me, I'd always hear it echoing in my mind. I could picture the men laughing while they tossed her back and forth, I could imagine them staring at her luscious body,

Alina’s POV My vision blurred when I woke up and blinked away the dark spots in front of my eyes, trying to understand where I was, what happened. My body felt tense like a rubber band pulled taut as it stretched from my shoulders to my knees, but when I tried to move any muscle in my body it just hurt. It was like there were wires connected to all my limbs, some in my back, others in my legs and feet. It made it hard for me to sit up, so I had to lean against the bed.“Relax…” I heard a familiar voice. “Just relax. You're fine.""Mister?" I croaked out, my voice sounding raw even to my own ears. He laughed.“From Sebastian to Mister, but I will take it” he said. His voice sounded distant, like I was listening through a tunnel. “You're safe here, we're going to get you out of that position in a few minutes, just let your muscles uncoil." His warm hand rested lightly on my shoulder. “I feel trapped.”"It's okay...you're not trapped." I could hear the smile in his voice. “You ju

Sebastian’s POVShe looked so frail as she laid there in the hospital bed, her head was wrapped up in bandages and her face pale and sickly looking from her blood loss. After she stormed off at the park, I didn't go after her. I didn't expect her to go far either but soon time passed and there was no sign of Alina. So I assumed she had gone home but when I got home, she wasn't back. She didn't answer any of my calls or texts. Eventually she returned, her shoulders hung lowly in defeat but still she stood tall with a defiant tilt to her chin and a determined set to her eyes. I could still tell something wasnt right from the way her body stiffened and her gaze avoided mine. “Where have you been?” She shrugged noncommittally. “Around.” Her voice sounded like it belonged to someone else. It was quiet and flat and hollow. But the more her expression changed, the more I realized how much I hated that look on her. It only lasted a second before her facade slipped and tears fell

Alina’s POV I didn't tell Sebastian anything when I got home. There was nothing to tell. I maintained a distance as much as I could, not responding when he spoke to me. I couldn't let him know what had happened. That would only mean more chaos. I was tired of the chaos it had managed to become a part of my everyday life.I was going to see the French men by myself the next day, I would make it work, with or without his help.“What are you offering?”“A partnership with my company is going to be a big step for us. It would give a fusion both to French and American culture , it gives people the same experience. My team will be in charge of developing the products and marketing your own, it is going to bring us together.” I smiled at the men in front of me . They looked like business tycoons but their demeanor was different - they weren't arrogant or condescending. In fact, they seemed eager to have a collaboration between companies. A few seconds of silence passed between them, as if
