Chapter 1

ผู้เขียน: Fairy
At three that afternoon, a phone call shattered the calm.

"Is this Selina Hart? We received a complaint filed under a real name alleging serious labor violations and invasion of privacy. The state labor department will open a formal investigation tomorrow."

Before I could ask anything, they hung up.

The moment the call ended, my phone started lighting up nonstop.

In just 30 seconds, hundreds of vicious texts and DMs flooded in.

"Drop dead, you sick capitalist!"

"You disgusting voyeur! I hope your whole family gets run over!"

"We've already doxxed your address. Get ready for hell!"

Despite the knot in my stomach, I opened social media with shaking hands.

The top trending post featured a video from Lucas Webb in marketing.

In the video, Lucas looked exhausted, his eyes red. "Oh my God, I can't take this anymore! My boss is a complete creep! She installed hidden cameras in my apartment to spy on me 24/7! She treats us like animals! We're nothing but slaves kept in a pen..."

Below the video was a dark photo. In the corner, you could just make out a camera with a blinking red light.

My blood boiled as I stared at the photo.

Hidden camera in his apartment? What a load of crap!

I recognized it instantly: it was the security camera in the hallway of the apartment building I'd leased for my employees.

Lucas had deliberately taken the photo from a dark corner after hours just to smear me.

This was absurd.

I'd always gone out of my way to take care of my employees. They got every weekend and public holiday off. I'd even used my own savings to rent an entire luxury apartment building so they could live rent-free near the office instead of paying outrageous rents or enduring long commutes.

On top of that, every time we wrapped a project, I treated the whole team to a trip to an island resort.

I happily picked up the tab for the pricey souvenirs they went wild for at the duty-free shops.

On each employee's birthday, I gave them a paid day off and a special gift, like the motorcycle Lucas had liked online, the designer handbag Lilith Moore had posted about, or tickets to a concert by David Price's favorite singer...

I treated them like family. I'd poured everything into taking care of them so they could focus on work and enjoy their lives.

And how did they repay me? By setting me up and turning the entire internet against me!

"Andrew!" I pressed the intercom button to call my assistant, Andrew Hale. My voice shook. "Get Lucas in here."

Less than two minutes later, my door flew open.

Lucas strolled in with his hands in his pockets, looking smug. Seven or eight people from his department followed him.

I pointed at the photo on the screen, my voice hoarse. "That's the security camera in the apartment hallway! It's clearly disclosed in the housing agreement! How dare you twist the facts like this?"

"Ha! So what!" Lucas scoffed. "You use the smart locks to track when we get home. That's control, plain and simple! You bloodsucker!

"And don't think we don't know what you did. You pocketed the bonuses that should have been ours, threw a little cash at some apartments to make it look like a perk, and now you want us to grovel with gratitude!"

I froze and looked past him at the others in disbelief.

David. Last month, when his family hit a crisis and he couldn't come up with the cash, I quietly covered it for him.

Emma Clarke. When she first started, she couldn't even put together a report. I stayed up late with her every night and taught her step by step.

And Lilith, who was always gushing about what a great boss I was...

But now, the moment our eyes met, each of them guiltily looked away. Not a single person spoke up for me.

At that moment, I finally understood. They hadn't been misled. Just like Lucas, they believed they were entitled to my personal money.

Heartache and betrayal twisted into a painful knot in my chest.

I drew a slow breath and blinked back the tears stinging my eyes. "So what exactly do you want?"

Lucas grinned, pleased with himself. "Simple. Put the project bonuses we're owed into our accounts!

"The moment the money hits our accounts, I'll go online and tell everyone this was a misunderstanding. Otherwise, I'll let the internet tear you apart!" Greed flashed in Lucas's eyes.

I glared at him. "Not a chance. None of you parasites deserve a cent."

Lucas's smile froze. "What did you say?"

"If you think that luxury apartment is a cage," I said coldly, "then get out! All of you! I want you out of my apartments by sundown. I won't let you freeload off me for another second!"

Lucas clearly hadn't expected me to stand my ground while the whole internet was coming down on me.

His expression shifted. Gritting his teeth, he snapped, "We're not going anywhere! Listen up, everyone. Until she pays us in cash, we won't lift a finger! As of now, we're all on strike! Let's see how she delivers those big projects!"

Then he stormed out with the rest of them and slammed the door.

I turned back to the contract I was preparing that afternoon, never imagining how far they'd go to force my hand...

Blacklisted from the industry and saddled with a massive penalty, Lucas had nowhere left to turn, and he snapped. He blamed me for everything and wanted me dead. But I had bodyguards with me at all times, so he couldn't get close. He looked for another way to get at me.Late one night, wearing a mask and cap, he slipped into the company's underground garage to tamper with my car. What he didn't know was that Andrew had just upgraded my car's security system with cameras covering every angle. If anyone touched it, an alarm would go off on my phone and wake me up.When I spotted Lucas on the live feed, I hit the lockdown control, sealed every garage door, and called the police. The sirens closing in scared Lucas out of his mind.He smashed open a ventilation shaft and crawled through it to escape, his clothes smeared with foul-smelling motor oil.Failing to hurt me only made him even more unhinged.A few days later, he slipped into the office in a mask and a janitor's uniform, pushing a

By the time Andrew found me, Lilith and David were trading accusations on the livestream, each trying to reveal something worse about the other. It was pure chaos."Ms. Hart, did you call me over to deal with these people?"I shook my head. "No, Andrew. We're going down there to see something even better in person."Andrew looked baffled, but he came with me anyway to the small downtown park where Lucas was streaming. We parked in the shadows and watched the group arguing nearby."I was the first one to say he took kickbacks! The spot's mine!" Lilith screamed, her hair a mess."Bullshit! I'm the one who told them about the confidential floor price, so I should get my job back!" David shoved Lilith hard, refusing to back down.Lucas was beside himself. "You idiots! She's setting a trap with that offer! We all got fired together, and if you keep talking, we're all going to prison!"Before he could finish, David kicked him hard in the stomach. Lilith yanked off one of her heels and starte

Lilith glanced at her screen and shrieked. "Resignation approved?! Are you insane?!"Lucas panicked too and jumped to his feet. "Selina! You wouldn't dare! If we leave, your flagship project is finished! Get ready to pay up and go bankrupt!""Oh? Is that right?" I looked at him, unmoved. The conference room door swung open.More than a dozen industry experts in tailored suits strode in, radiating confidence."Allow me to introduce them," I said, my voice flat as I surveyed their stunned faces. "This is an elite team from the National Research Institute. Effective immediately, they're taking over every project you tried to use against me."And just like that, you've lost your only bargaining chip."The conference room went dead silent. The people who'd been strutting around a minute earlier had all gone pale. They surrounded Lucas, furious, demanding answers."Lucas! Didn't you say that if we threatened to quit, she'd give us everything we wanted?! Then how did it end up like this?""Ye

Lucas panicked, but with the phones still streaming, he shouted, "It's fake! Don't believe her! She obviously forged that evidence on the spot! If it was her money, why did she wait until we went on strike to show us?!"That was all it took for the fools in the room to turn on me again."Yeah! It's definitely fake! What kind of boss would be generous enough to pay her employees' rent out of her own pocket?""Ms. Hart, you're disgusting! How could you set us up like this?""You got rich off our blood and sweat, and now you're trying to ruin us. Aren't you afraid of going to hell?!""If you don't deposit the full cash value of our benefits into our accounts today, we'll fight you to the bitter end!"I sat in my chair and looked at all those familiar faces. All I felt was sadness. They didn't actually care what the truth was. They were simply greedy, determined to take their pound of flesh from me.Even with the proof right in front of them, they'd rather believe Lucas's clumsy lies.Luca

I didn't want to worry her, so I only said something had come up at work. Then I arranged for her and my father to leave home and stay at a hotel. After I hung up, I felt completely drained.Andrew looked worried. "Ms. Hart, things are getting out of hand online. You're not seriously thinking of giving them cash instead of their benefits just to make this go away, are you? If you give in now, you'll lose your employees' respect!""Give in?" I let out a short, bitter laugh, but it pulled at the cut on my forehead. I sucked in a sharp breath. The pain snapped me out of my grief. Suddenly, my mind was clearer than ever, my resolve hardening like steel."Andrew, don't panic. I'm not giving in to a bunch of people this greedy."Once we're back from the hospital, call everyone into the conference room!"If they want a fight, I'll give them one!Half an hour later, I pushed open the door to the main conference room. What I saw inside was so absurd it made me sick.Lucas was sitting in my seat

That afternoon, I swallowed my anger and walked into the marketing department. "I have an important meeting with our international partners at two. I need two people to come with me."Dead silence. Nobody stood up.Some leaned back and scrolled through their phones while others filed their nails, as if I weren't there.Lucas sat with his legs crossed and sneered. "Listen up, everyone. Ms. Hart needs us."Someone beside him snickered. "God, we still haven't gotten our bonuses. Who'd lift a finger for a twisted, greedy boss like her?"Their mocking laughter echoed through the room."Fine." I had a meeting to prepare for and no time to waste on these idiots, so I headed for the elevator.Lilith hurried after me. "Ms. Hart, wait!" she pleaded. "Please don't be angry with Lucas. He just doesn't want to lose his apartment. Can't you withdraw the eviction notices? Everyone's already so stressed out."I stared her down. "You think Lucas was right to spread lies and try to blackmail me?""Of co
