Chapter 2

Author: Fairy
That afternoon, I swallowed my anger and walked into the marketing department. "I have an important meeting with our international partners at two. I need two people to come with me."

Dead silence. Nobody stood up.

Some leaned back and scrolled through their phones while others filed their nails, as if I weren't there.

Lucas sat with his legs crossed and sneered. "Listen up, everyone. Ms. Hart needs us."

Someone beside him snickered. "God, we still haven't gotten our bonuses. Who'd lift a finger for a twisted, greedy boss like her?"

Their mocking laughter echoed through the room.

"Fine." I had a meeting to prepare for and no time to waste on these idiots, so I headed for the elevator.

Lilith hurried after me. "Ms. Hart, wait!" she pleaded. "Please don't be angry with Lucas. He just doesn't want to lose his apartment. Can't you withdraw the eviction notices? Everyone's already so stressed out."

I stared her down. "You think Lucas was right to spread lies and try to blackmail me?"

"Of course I'm on your side," Lilith said, refusing to meet my eyes. "But Lucas does have a point. You're rich, Ms. Hart. If you won't let us stay in those luxury apartments, the least you could do is find us somewhere cheaper to live or just give us the money instead..."

The last bit of warmth in me froze solid.

She was hiding behind Lucas and playing the helpless victim to test my limits.

"Lilith, drop the act and get back to your desk." My voice was ice-cold.

Lilith went pale but still tried to argue.

"Ms. Hart, I'll go with you." Andrew strode over with his briefcase and planted himself between Lilith and me.

Without warning, an enraged mob stormed the first-floor lobby.

Camera flashes went off in my face amid a barrage of obscene curses.

"There she is! The pervert boss in the suit!"

"Die, bloodsucker! Give back everybody's hard-earned money!"

The crowd spiraled out of control. Someone hurled something hard, striking me in the forehead and leaving me injured.

"Damn it! Get Ms. Hart down to the garage!" Andrew shouted as he called the police.

More than a dozen security guards held the lunatics back while Andrew hustled me into the car.

In the car, Andrew handed me his phone. "Ms. Hart, Lucas used his livestream to send those people here."

On the screen, Lucas was sobbing into the camera. "That greedy boss kicked us out of the apartments because I exposed the truth! She wants to squeeze every last drop of blood out of us and leave us on the street!"

The comments scrolling across the screen were filled with vicious curses aimed at me. Some people were even cheering at the footage of me getting hit in the head.

I stared at the screen, my fingers ice-cold.

What other company in this industry offers such generous benefits without making its employees work overtime? What more could they possibly want?

But what finally broke me was seeing Greta Novak suddenly appear on-screen.

She was sitting next to Lucas, wiping away tears as she backed up everything he said and called me greedy and heartless.

In that instant, it felt like a blade had been driven straight through my heart.

Greta's ex-husband was violently abusive. I was the one who brought in my personal attorney and called in favors so she could win in court and escape that nightmare with her child.

I knew how hard it was to raise a child alone, so I supported her however I could. I let her leave early, gave her extra bonuses, and even paid her child's tuition.

And now the woman I'd done so much to help was standing shoulder to shoulder with Lucas, twisting the knife!

Overwhelmed by despair and betrayal, I felt a sharp pain shoot through the wound on my forehead.

Outside the car, Lilith rushed over and banged on the window. "Ms. Hart, why don't you go live too? Just apologize, promise to let everyone keep their apartments, and throw in a few extra benefits. Then all this will blow over. It's what's best for the company..."

"Get lost!" I rolled down the window and glared at her, my voice raw. "Take your disgusting fake concern and get lost. Now!"

The murderous look I gave her sent Lilith running.

The car had barely started moving when Andrew took a call, and the color drained from his face. "Ms. Hart, the client saw the news online. They've pulled out of the deal."

At the same time, my phone started buzzing. It was my mother.

She was sobbing on the other end, barely holding herself together. "Lina, what is going on? A bunch of lunatics just threw red paint all over our front door and stuck notes on it calling you a bloodsucker! Oh my God, who did you cross?!"

Blacklisted from the industry and saddled with a massive penalty, Lucas had nowhere left to turn, and he snapped. He blamed me for everything and wanted me dead. But I had bodyguards with me at all times, so he couldn't get close. He looked for another way to get at me.Late one night, wearing a mask and cap, he slipped into the company's underground garage to tamper with my car. What he didn't know was that Andrew had just upgraded my car's security system with cameras covering every angle. If anyone touched it, an alarm would go off on my phone and wake me up.When I spotted Lucas on the live feed, I hit the lockdown control, sealed every garage door, and called the police. The sirens closing in scared Lucas out of his mind.He smashed open a ventilation shaft and crawled through it to escape, his clothes smeared with foul-smelling motor oil.Failing to hurt me only made him even more unhinged.A few days later, he slipped into the office in a mask and a janitor's uniform, pushing a

By the time Andrew found me, Lilith and David were trading accusations on the livestream, each trying to reveal something worse about the other. It was pure chaos."Ms. Hart, did you call me over to deal with these people?"I shook my head. "No, Andrew. We're going down there to see something even better in person."Andrew looked baffled, but he came with me anyway to the small downtown park where Lucas was streaming. We parked in the shadows and watched the group arguing nearby."I was the first one to say he took kickbacks! The spot's mine!" Lilith screamed, her hair a mess."Bullshit! I'm the one who told them about the confidential floor price, so I should get my job back!" David shoved Lilith hard, refusing to back down.Lucas was beside himself. "You idiots! She's setting a trap with that offer! We all got fired together, and if you keep talking, we're all going to prison!"Before he could finish, David kicked him hard in the stomach. Lilith yanked off one of her heels and starte

Lilith glanced at her screen and shrieked. "Resignation approved?! Are you insane?!"Lucas panicked too and jumped to his feet. "Selina! You wouldn't dare! If we leave, your flagship project is finished! Get ready to pay up and go bankrupt!""Oh? Is that right?" I looked at him, unmoved. The conference room door swung open.More than a dozen industry experts in tailored suits strode in, radiating confidence."Allow me to introduce them," I said, my voice flat as I surveyed their stunned faces. "This is an elite team from the National Research Institute. Effective immediately, they're taking over every project you tried to use against me."And just like that, you've lost your only bargaining chip."The conference room went dead silent. The people who'd been strutting around a minute earlier had all gone pale. They surrounded Lucas, furious, demanding answers."Lucas! Didn't you say that if we threatened to quit, she'd give us everything we wanted?! Then how did it end up like this?""Ye

Lucas panicked, but with the phones still streaming, he shouted, "It's fake! Don't believe her! She obviously forged that evidence on the spot! If it was her money, why did she wait until we went on strike to show us?!"That was all it took for the fools in the room to turn on me again."Yeah! It's definitely fake! What kind of boss would be generous enough to pay her employees' rent out of her own pocket?""Ms. Hart, you're disgusting! How could you set us up like this?""You got rich off our blood and sweat, and now you're trying to ruin us. Aren't you afraid of going to hell?!""If you don't deposit the full cash value of our benefits into our accounts today, we'll fight you to the bitter end!"I sat in my chair and looked at all those familiar faces. All I felt was sadness. They didn't actually care what the truth was. They were simply greedy, determined to take their pound of flesh from me.Even with the proof right in front of them, they'd rather believe Lucas's clumsy lies.Luca

I didn't want to worry her, so I only said something had come up at work. Then I arranged for her and my father to leave home and stay at a hotel. After I hung up, I felt completely drained.Andrew looked worried. "Ms. Hart, things are getting out of hand online. You're not seriously thinking of giving them cash instead of their benefits just to make this go away, are you? If you give in now, you'll lose your employees' respect!""Give in?" I let out a short, bitter laugh, but it pulled at the cut on my forehead. I sucked in a sharp breath. The pain snapped me out of my grief. Suddenly, my mind was clearer than ever, my resolve hardening like steel."Andrew, don't panic. I'm not giving in to a bunch of people this greedy."Once we're back from the hospital, call everyone into the conference room!"If they want a fight, I'll give them one!Half an hour later, I pushed open the door to the main conference room. What I saw inside was so absurd it made me sick.Lucas was sitting in my seat
