Prologue

목구멍을 누군가 손으로 꽉 틀어쥔 것만 같았다.

한참이 지나서야 가까스로 정신을 차린 내가 떨리는 목소리로 물었다.

“도대체 왜...”

‘도대체 왜 바람을 피워놓고 나와 혼인신고를 한 거지?’

‘왜 내 인생에서 가장 행복해야 할 날, 이토록 잔인하게 진실을 내뱉는 거지?’

지도현이 잠시 멍하니 있더니, 갑자기 크게 웃음을 터뜨렸다.

“네가 이겼네.”

영문도 모른 채 지도현을 바라보는데, 차량 스피커에서 귀에 익은 목소리가 흘러나왔다.

[오늘 밤엔 내가 좋아하는 딸기 향으로 써야 해.]

나는 경악하며 눈을 크게 떴다. 온몸의 피가 얼어붙는 것 같았다.

“혜민이랑 내기했거든. 내가 바람 피운 걸 알면 어떤 반응을 보일지 말이야. 나는 네가 내 뺨을 때릴 거라 했고, 혜민이는 네가 왜 그랬냐고 물어볼 거라고 했지.”

지도현이 눈썹을 까닥였다.

“내가 이기면 걔가 검은색 스타킹을 신기로 했고, 걔가 이기면... 다 들었지?”

말이 끝나기가 무섭게 스피커에서 다시 방혜민의 비웃음 섞인 목소리가 터져 나왔다.

[임수아, 5년 만이네. 넌 여전히 내가 생각했던 대로 멍청하구나. 그래도 남자 보는 눈 하나는 변함없네. 이번 남자, 나도 아주 마음에 들거든.]

비릿한 조롱에 손발마저 저려왔다.

문득 5년 전 그날로 되돌아간 것 같았다.

출장을 서둘러 마치고 돌아온 날이었다.

전남편 정우진의 생일을 챙겨주려던 나는 문을 열자마자 창가에서 엉켜 있는 정우진과 방혜민을 목격했다.

나를 발견한 정우진은 얼어붙었지만, 방혜민은 태연하게 담배를 물며 말했다.

“임수아, 미안하게 됐어. 너무 외로워서 잠깐 네 남편 좀 빌려 썼거든.”

그때도 지금처럼 나는 울음을 터뜨리며 물었다.

방혜민과 정우진에게.

“도대체 왜 그런 짓을 한 거야?”

하지만 두 사람이 변명하는 순간, 내 귀에는 마치 솜뭉치를 쑤셔 박은 듯 아무런 소리도 들리지 않았다.

그들이 새파랗게 질린 표정으로 소리를 지를 때까지 나는 멍하니 서 있을 뿐이었다.

그러다 아랫배가 끊어질 듯한 통증에 허리를 펼 수가 없었다.

아래를 내려다보고 난 뒤에야, 비로소 정신이 번쩍 들었다. 다리 사이로 붉은 피가 흘러 내리고 있었다.

그날, 나는 내 인생에서 가장 소중했던 세 사람을 동시에 잃었다.

10년을 함께한 단짝 친구, 결혼 1년 차였던 남편, 그리고 내 뱃속에서 3개월을 자라던 아이까지.

A small, quiet town called Raven Hollow the kind of place where nothing ever seemed to change. The afternoon sun filtered through the kitchen window as Danika stood at the sink, sleeves rolled up, hands deep in soapy water. Danika went silent for a while. The ticking of the wall clock suddenly felt louder, filling the space between her and Cat. “No,” she finally said, her face straight, her tone firm but tired. “I know I need the job, but not this far, Cat.
