Chapter 33 Lena Carter

last update Veröffentlichungsdatum: 07.10.2026 16:02:32

The darkness didn't just take her. It swallowed her whole.

Lena fell.

It wasn't a physical fall. There was no wind, no ground rushing up to meet her. It was like falling backward through her own life, through memories that weren't hers and yet they were.

A little girl, bare feet slapping against cold lab tiles, running.

A woman's hand - warm, tight, desperate - holding hers.

A boy laughing beside her, and that laugh did something painful to her chest.

Ethan.

Daniel.

Maya.

Seven doors, standing in a circle like judges.

A black sphere that pulsed like a heart.

A city choking under a red sky.

Then — nothing. Just silence so thick it pressed against her eardrums.

Lena's eyes snapped open.

White. Everywhere.

No walls. No ceiling. No floor she could actually see. Just an infinite, blinding white that went on forever and made her feel like she was standing on nothing at all.

"Hello?" Her own voice startled her. It echoed and kept echoing.

Then another voice answered. Small. A child's voice.

"You finally came back."

Lena spun around.

A little girl stood maybe ten feet away. Eleven years old at most. Dark tangled hair. And eyes that stopped Lena's heart because they were her eyes.

On the girl's palm, the same silver symbol Lena had been marked with.

Lena couldn't breathe. "Who are you?"

The girl tilted her head and smiled, a sad, knowing smile that didn't belong on a child.

"You already know."

"No, I don't."

"You just forgot."

The girl turned and started walking away. Her bare feet made no sound on the white nothing.

Lena stumbled after her. "Wait! Where are we?"

"Before."

"Before what?"

The girl didn't look back. "Before you became Lena."

The words hit her like ice water. Lena's heart started hammering against her ribs.

Ahead of them, a door just... appeared. It hadn't been there. It was old wood, out of place in all that white. It creaked open on its own.

The girl nodded toward it. "Go."

Lena's hand was shaking when she reached for the frame. She stepped through.

And the white was gone.

She was in a laboratory.

But not the one under Brooklyn. This one was older. Bulkier machines, thicker cables, screens glowing with symbols she almost recognized. The air smelled like ozone and disinfectant.

Scientists in white coats rushed past her. None of them saw her.

In the center of the room, a young woman stood with her back to Lena, staring at a massive glass chamber.

Lena knew that back. That hair.

"Mom?"

Dr. Evelyn Carter turned around. She was younger. So much younger than Lena remembered. No lines around her eyes. No exhaustion.

Beside her stood a man Lena had never seen before, tall, nervous, holding a clipboard like a shield.

Then a door hissed open and he walked in.

Young Ethan. His hair shorter. No scar on his jaw yet. His eyes were still soft.

Lena's knees went weak. "He was here..."

The little girl was beside her again. Lena hadn't even heard her enter.

"He was always here," the girl whispered.

Ethan walked straight to Evelyn. "What are the results?"

Evelyn didn't look away from the chamber. "Stable. For now."

"For how long?"

"We don't know. The consciousness is holding, but it's... aware. Too aware."

Young Ethan followed her gaze to the glass chamber.

Inside, floating in liquid, was a black sphere. It pulsed. Slow. Deliberate.

Lena felt every hair on her body stand up. "What is that?"

The little girl's voice was barely a breath. "The beginning."

The black sphere suddenly flared with light.

Every scientist in the room froze mid-step.

A flat, mechanical voice boomed from the speakers overhead.

*CONSCIOUSNESS DETECTED.*

Lena flinched backward. "No..."

Another line of text flashed across every screen at once, in stark red letters.

*SUBJECT ZERO ACTIVE.*

The little girl looked up at Lena, her eyes full of tears.

"That's you."

Lena shook her head violently. "No. I wasn't even born yet. I wasn't-"

The girl gave her a look that was ancient. "You were. You were the first."

Inside the glass chamber, the sphere pulsed harder.

Evelyn grabbed Ethan's arm. "We have to shut it down. Right now."

Ethan pulled away, his face pale with terror. "If we do, everything we've learned disappears. All of it!"

"That's the point!" Evelyn shouted, and for the first time Lena heard real fear in her mother's voice. "Don't you get it?"

Ethan stared at the sphere, trembling. "You don't understand. It already knows us. It knows our names. It knows-"

The sphere pulsed again and the lights blew out.

Darkness, absolute.

When the emergency lights stuttered back on, the lab was empty.

Every scientist - gone. Just vanished.

Only Ethan and Evelyn remained. And the little girl.

Evelyn was on her knees. Ethan was standing over the chamber, hands pressed to the glass.

Lena whispered, "What happened?"

The little girl's voice cracked. "The first collapse."

The lab melted.

The walls peeled away and became crumbling skyscrapers. The sterile floors became cracked asphalt. Sirens wailed in the distance. Smoke filled the sky.

The ruined city.

Lena saw them - herself and Ethan. But not her. An older version. Her hair longer, her face harder, lined with grief. She was holding the black sphere in both hands, hugging it to her chest like a child.

Ethan was reaching for her, begging. "Give it to me. Please, Lena, give it to me."

Older Lena shook her head, tears streaming down her face. "If I do, it starts again. It all starts again."

"You can't carry this alone!"

"I have to."

"You don't have to do anything alone anymore!"

Older Lena looked at him then, and the love in that look made Lena's chest ache.

"I love you," she whispered.

Ethan's hand stretched out.

But older Lena stepped back, into the light of the sphere. She pressed her palm against it.

Everything turned white and Lena screamed as the memory tore itself out of her mind.

She was back in the white room, on her knees, gasping.

The little girl was crying openly now.

"What did I do?" Lena choked out.

The girl knelt beside her. "You saved everyone."

"Then why did the world end? Why did it still end?"

"Because saving everyone wasn't enough." The girl wiped her eyes with her sleeve. "You kept trying to save the world. But the world wasn't what needed saving."

The white room shuddered. A long, jagged crack split the nothingness above them.

Numbers bled into the sky.

*00:42:17*

Lena stared up at it, her blood running cold. "The ninth world."

The girl nodded, terrified. "We don't have much time."

"How do I stop it? Tell me how to stop it!"

"You have to remember the final memory. The one you hid from yourself."

"What final memory?"

The girl pointed behind Lena.

Another door had appeared. This one was different. It was warm, wooden, familiar. Carved into it was a single name.

ETHAN.

The second her fingers brushed the handle, she heard his voice. Raw. Desperate.

"LENA!"

She turned.

Far across the white, Ethan stood. His clothes were torn, blood on his shirt, but he was alive. He was real.

He ran. She ran.

They collided inches apart, breathing hard, not quite touching.

"You found me," she whispered.

"I told you I would," he said, his voice breaking. "I always would."

Lena stared into his eyes - those eyes she knew in eight different lives. "Do you remember?"

"Yes."

"Everything?"

He nodded.

"The first world?"

"Yes."

"The eighth?"

His jaw clenched. "Yes."

Her hands fisted at her sides. "Then tell me the truth. The real truth."

"What truth?"

"Why did you keep bringing me back?"

Ethan looked away like the question physically hurt him.

Lena grabbed his shirt. "Ethan. Look at me."

He finally met her eyes, and his were full of a guilt so old it had become part of him.

"Because every time you died, I couldn't accept it," he whispered. "Every time I watched you die, something in me broke. So I... I reset it. I thought if I had one more chance-"

"So you reset the world?" Her voice rose. "You destroyed eight worlds because you couldn't let me go?"

"I thought I could fix it! I thought I could get it right!"

"And Maya?"

"I tried to save her too. Every time."

"Daniel?"

"I failed," he said, his voice hollow. "I failed him every single time."

The little girl stepped between them, her small face serious.

"You both made the same mistake."

Lena looked down at her. "What mistake?"

The girl pointed up at the black sphere now floating above them all, huge and silent, cracked down the middle.

"You thought the world needed saving." The crack on the sphere spread with a deafening sound.

"But the world wasn't broken."

She looked at Lena, then at Ethan.

"You were."

Lena felt dizzy. "What does that mean?"

The little girl stared directly into Lena's soul.

"You weren't the person Project Zero was designed to save." She slowly pointed at Ethan. "You were designed to save _him_."

Ethan went completely still. All color drained from his face.

Above them, the countdown stuttered and changed.

*00:10:00*

The little girl vanished like smoke.

Lena grabbed Ethan's hand - it was ice cold. "What happens at zero?"

The black sphere above them opened like an eye.

Inside it was a memory. One Lena had never been allowed to see.

Her mother stood in front of the original Project Zero console, looking straight into the recording lens. Straight at her.

Evelyn's eyes were red from crying.

"If Lena ever remembers everything, tell her the truth. Tell her what we did."

The recording glitched.

Then Evelyn leaned closer and said, seven words that stopped Lena's heart.

"Ethan isn't the anchor."

The world went silent.

Another message burned itself across the sphere.

*ORIGINAL ANCHOR: LENA CARTER.*

Then, underneath it, another line.

*ETHAN CROSS: SUBJECT ZERO.*

Lena looked at Ethan. He was staring at the words, his mouth open, his whole body shaking.

The countdown kept going.

09:59.

09:58.

And from somewhere far outside the white room, beyond the walls of existence, Maya's voice tore through, screaming in pure terror:

"LENA! DON'T REMEMBER THE LAST PART! DON'T YOU DARE REMEMBER IT!"

To be continued. ...

The laughter stopped.Mid-laugh, cut off, like a tape stopped.Silence returned to the chamber, so heavy and absolute that Lena could hear her own heart hammering and Ethan's ragged breathing. For several seconds, nobody moved. Nobody dared to breathe.Lena stared at the seventh door.It was still opening. On its own. No hands touching it.Slowly. Painfully. Inch by inch, as if the darkness behind it was heavy and pushing through.Beyond it was not another room. Not a lab, not a corridor. It was darkness. Not ordinary darkness that light can fill. This was the kind of darkness that ate light. The blue glow from the memory core seemed to disappear, to be swallowed, whenever it reached the doorway.Ethan tightened his grip on Lena's hand so hard her knuckles went white."Don't go near it," he whispered, his voice raw. The machines screamed. Not an alarm. A scream - a high, electronic shriek of a thousand hard drives spinning up at once, so loud Lena could barely hear her own thoughts. She pressed her hands over her ears.Seven versions of her stood around the chamber, each frozen beneath a different beam of white light that had come from nowhere. Trapped. Like specimens. And Ethan stood at the center. Alone. His eyes were silver. Not glowing bright like Daniel's had. Not normal brown either. Just... silver enough to make Lena's heart stop dead in her chest. A thin ring of silver around his pupils, spreading."Ethan?" Her voice was small under the screaming. He didn't answer. He just stared straight ahead, at nothing.Daniel stepped forward quickly and put a hand out to stop her."Don't touch him."Lena turned on him sharply, panic making her angry. "What did you do to him? What did you do?!""Nothing," Daniel said, his face pale in the white light."Then why is he like this? Why does he look like—
