Chapter 34: Subject Zero

“Don't remember the last part!”

Maya's voice ripped through the white room, raw and panicked.

Lena couldn't move. Her eyes were locked on the words burning in the air above them.

*ETHAN CROSS: SUBJECT ZERO.*

Ethan stood beside her, completely still. Too still. Like he'd stopped breathing.

"What does Subject Zero mean?" Her voice sounded small.

He didn't answer.

"Ethan." She grabbed his arm. "Talk to me."

He finally looked at her, and his eyes were empty. "I don't know."

"You said you remembered everything. You said you remembered all eight worlds."

"I remember what _happened_," he said, staring at the black sphere floating above them, cracked and pulsing. "The cities. The collapses. You dying. I remember all of that."

He swallowed.

"But I don't remember why I became Subject Zero. They took that part from me."

The countdown bled louder across the white sky.

*09:31.*

The sphere pulsed, and the light swallowed them.

---

He was young. So young it hurt to look at him.

Ethan, maybe sixteen, sitting alone on a hospital bed that was too big for him. His legs dangling. A thin hospital gown.

A doctor stood by the window, holding a chart, not looking at him.

"Your condition is worsening, Ethan."

Young Ethan didn't look up. He just stared out the window at the sky.

"Can you fix it?"

A pause. "We don't know."

"What happens if you can't?"

The doctor finally looked at him. And his face said everything.

"I don't want to lie to you, son."

Young Ethan's hands tightened on the edge of the bed. "How long do I have?"

"Maybe a year. With treatment, maybe a little more."

The memory dissolved before Lena could breathe.

Now they were in the original lab. The old one. The one before Brooklyn.

Dr. Evelyn Carter stood in front of him. She looked exhausted, her eyes red.

"You're the only person compatible with the system, Ethan."

"Why me?" His voice was hoarse. Younger, but already tired.

"Because your brain responds differently to the Archive. It doesn't reject it. It... listens to it."

Ethan looked at the black sphere in the glass chamber. It pulsed, soft and inviting.

"What is it?" he asked.

"Something we found deep beneath the city. Older than the city itself. We don't know how long it's been there."

Ethan stepped closer to the glass. "Can it save me?"

Evelyn didn't answer. She couldn't.

He understood anyway. A flicker of desperate hope lit his face.

"You think it can."

"We think it can preserve consciousness," she said quietly. "Keep it alive even when the body... can't."

"And after? What happens after you preserve it?"

"We don't know."

Ethan stared at the sphere for a long time. At his only chance.

"Then use me."

The memory shattered like glass.

Lena was back, staring at him, her chest tight. "You were sick?"

Ethan nodded, not looking at her. "Before I met you. Long before. Terminal. They gave me a year."

"Why didn't you ever tell me?" Her voice cracked.

"Because I didn't remember," he whispered. "Until just now, I didn't remember being sick at all. Project Zero took that memory first."

The sphere pulsed again.

Another memory unfolded around them.

Lena was younger. Hair pulled back, lab coat too big for her. She stood beside Ethan in the lab, both of them looking at the sphere.

They looked so close then. So unbroken.

Evelyn was speaking to them, her voice heavy.

"The system needs two subjects to work. It was never designed for one."

Lena frowned. "Why two?"

Evelyn pointed at Ethan. "One consciousness creates the memory. It anchors the world. It holds the timeline together."

Then she pointed at Lena. "The other preserves it. Carries it forward. Remembers."

Lena's younger face changed. She understood before Evelyn even said it.

"Which one am I?"

Evelyn looked at her with so much sadness that it made Lena's stomach drop.

"The memory."

The white room cracked. A deep, loud sound like ice breaking.

*07:04.*

Lena turned toward Ethan, her mind racing. "So you were Subject Zero because you were the first person ever connected to Project Zero. You were the anchor."

"Yes," he said.

"And I was the one who remembered. I was supposed to carry the memories forward."

"Yes."

"Then why did I keep dying? If I was supposed to preserve it, why did I die in every world?"

Ethan finally looked at her, and his eyes were full of so much guilt it was unbearable.

"Because the system couldn't separate us. It tied us together. When one of us broke, the other broke too. It was never supposed to work with two people who loved each other."

A violent crack split the entire room in half.

Maya's voice screamed through the crack, closer now.

"LENA!"

Lena spun around.

Maya was there, behind a wall of glass that hadn't been there before. Her silver eyes, usually so bright, were dimming, flickering like a dying lightbulb. Blood ran from her nose.

"Listen to me!" Maya slammed her hands against the glass. "You can't complete the memory! You can't!"

Lena ran to the glass. "What happened to you? What is this?"

"You can't open the final memory!"

"Why? Why not?"

"Because the final memory isn't yours!"

Maya pointed a shaking finger past Lena. At Ethan.

"It's his."

Ethan stepped forward, his face pale. "What did I do?"

Maya shook her head, tears running down her face. "You didn't do it. You didn't do anything."

She looked at Lena, and her voice dropped to a whisper.

"She did."

Lena froze. The air left her lungs. "Who?"

Maya mouthed the words.

"The original Lena. The first one."

The glass between them didn't just crack. It exploded into a million shards of light.

Maya disappeared with a scream.

The countdown stopped dead.

*00:05:00*

And in the center of the white, where the black sphere had been, a single line of text appeared.

*FINAL MEMORY AVAILABLE.*

Ethan looked at Lena, his face full of dread. "Don't open it."

She stared at him. "You're afraid."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I remember what you asked me to do. In the original lab. Before the first collapse."

Lena's heart pounded so hard it hurt. "What did I ask?"

Ethan looked directly into her eyes and said the words she'd been hiding from herself for eight worlds.

"You asked me to forget you."

Silence.

The words didn't make sense. They couldn't make sense.

"Why would I... why would I ever ask you that?" Lena whispered.

"Because you believed Project Zero would keep looping as long as I remembered you," he said, his voice raw. "You thought if I forgot you, the system would have no anchor. No reason to reset. You thought it would finally end."

Lena shook her head, tears blurring her vision. "And did it work? Did you forget me?"

"No." His voice broke. "I never could."

The countdown slammed back on.

*04:42.* And it was ticking faster now.

Ethan reached toward the black sphere, toward the final memory. "I can finish it. Let me. You don't have to see it."

Lena caught his hand and held it tight. Her hand was shaking.

"No. If the final memory belongs to me, I have to see it. No more secrets."

"You might not come back from it," he said.

"I already came back," she whispered. "Eight times. I'm not stopping now."

She let go of his hand and placed her palm flat against the floating sphere.

The white room vanished.

She was in the original laboratory.

Evelyn was crying in the corner, her face in her hands.

Daniel was standing by the door, frozen, watching.

Maya was unconscious inside a chamber, floating.

And in the middle of it all, Ethan stood beside her. Beside _her_. The original Lena.

Older Lena looked exhausted. Like she hadn't slept in years. She was holding the black sphere in her arms, and it was screaming with light.

She turned to Ethan.

"Ethan, when this begins, you have to promise me something."

He already knew what she was going to say. His face said he did.

"What?"

"If I forget, don't bring me back. Don't look for me. Don't reset it."

Ethan shook his head instantly, violently. "I can't promise that. Don't ask me to promise that."

"You have to," she begged, her voice breaking. "Ethan, listen to me. If you keep bringing me back, the system will keep searching for me. It will keep using us to build new worlds just to find me again. It will never stop."

"And if I don't bring you back?" His eyes were wet. "What happens then?"

"Then it ends," she whispered. "The loop ends. Everyone else gets to live."

Ethan stared at her like she was asking him to cut out his own heart.

"You're asking me to let you disappear."

"Yes."

A long, terrible silence stretched between them. The sphere pulsed louder and louder.

Then Ethan whispered, his voice barely audible:

"I promise."

The memory shattered.

Lena gasped and opened her eyes. She was on the floor of the white room.

Ethan was kneeling beside her, holding her shoulders.

The countdown was gone.

So was the black sphere.

For one perfect second, there was absolute silence. Peace.

Lena let out a shaky breath. "It worked. It... we stopped it."

Ethan wasn't looking at her. He was staring at the space where the sphere had been.

"No."

A new message burned itself into the white, letter by letter, in angry red.

*PROMISE BROKEN.*

Ethan stared at it, his face going bloodless.

Lena slowly stood up on shaking legs. "What does that mean? What promise?"

The screen changed.

*SUBJECT ZERO HAS REJECTED FINAL PROTOCOL.*

Then, one more line.

*RESET CANCELLED.*

Lena exhaled. A laugh of relief escaped her. "It worked. See? Reset cancelled. It's over."

Ethan looked at her, and the look in his eyes made her blood freeze.

"No, Lena. You don't understand. It's not over."

A final line appeared. And this time, it wasn't red. It was black.

*NINTH WORLD: ACTIVE.*

The floor under their feet trembled. Then shook violently.

Far above them, impossibly far, sirens began screaming. Not in the white room. In Brooklyn. In the real world.

And the voice from beneath the city - the voice that had haunted all eight worlds - whispered through the crack in the white, right next to Lena's ear.

"Now we begin."

To be continued. ..

The darkness didn't just take her. It swallowed her whole.Lena fell.It wasn't a physical fall. There was no wind, no ground rushing up to meet her. It was like falling backward through her own life, through memories that weren't hers and yet they were.A little girl, bare feet slapping against cold lab tiles, running.A woman's hand - warm, tight, desperate - holding hers.A boy laughing beside her, and that laugh did something painful to her chest.Ethan.Daniel.Maya.Seven doors, standing in a circle like judges.A black sphere that pulsed like a heart.A city choking under a red sky. Then — nothing. Just silence so thick it pressed against her eardrums.Lena's eyes snapped open.White. Everywhere. No walls. No ceiling. No floor she could actually see. Just an infinite, blinding white that went on forever and made her feel like she was standing on nothing at all."Hello?" Her own voice startled her. It echoed and kept echoing. Then another voice answered. Small. A child's voice.

The next second, empty air.Daniel ran to where Ethan had been standing. "Don't! Don't touch the floor!"Lena froze mid-step.A thin circle of silver light had bloomed under her feet. It pulsed. Once. Then it was gone, like it was never there. The older Lena was staring at that spot, her face grey."He was taken.""By what?" Lena snapped. "By what? Tell me!""The system.""Then get him back! You know how this place works, get him back!"The older woman shook her head slowly."You don't get it. Ethan wasn't taken because he was weak, Lena."She turned and looked at the seventh door."He was taken because he's the key."_CLICK._A loud, heavy metallic click echoed through the whole chamber. The seventh door had unlocked itself.Lena didn't think. • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 30 — THE THING BEHIND THE SEVENTH DOOR

The laughter stopped.Mid-laugh, cut off, like a tape stopped.Silence returned to the chamber, so heavy and absolute that Lena could hear her own heart hammering and Ethan's ragged breathing. For several seconds, nobody moved. Nobody dared to breathe.Lena stared at the seventh door.It was still opening. On its own. No hands touching it.Slowly. Painfully. Inch by inch, as if the darkness behind it was heavy and pushing through.Beyond it was not another room. Not a lab, not a corridor. It was darkness. Not ordinary darkness that light can fill. This was the kind of darkness that ate light. The blue glow from the memory core seemed to disappear, to be swallowed, whenever it reached the doorway.Ethan tightened his grip on Lena's hand so hard her knuckles went white."Don't go near it," he whispered, his voice raw. "Lena, whatever you do, don't go near that door."Lena looked at him, her eyes wide, tears drying on her cheeks. "You said we were never supposed to open it. Why? Tell me

The machines screamed. Not an alarm. A scream - a high, electronic shriek of a thousand hard drives spinning up at once, so loud Lena could barely hear her own thoughts. She pressed her hands over her ears.Seven versions of her stood around the chamber, each frozen beneath a different beam of white light that had come from nowhere. Trapped. Like specimens. And Ethan stood at the center. Alone. His eyes were silver. Not glowing bright like Daniel's had. Not normal brown either. Just... silver enough to make Lena's heart stop dead in her chest. A thin ring of silver around his pupils, spreading."Ethan?" Her voice was small under the screaming. He didn't answer. He just stared straight ahead, at nothing.Daniel stepped forward quickly and put a hand out to stop her."Don't touch him."Lena turned on him sharply, panic making her angry. "What did you do to him? What did you do?!""Nothing," Daniel said, his face pale in the white light."Then why is he like this? Why does he look like—
