Chapter 1

"Claire Sharp! Why are you throwing tantrum?”

The man's hand clamped down on my wrist with such force it felt as though he meant to crush the bones.

I stopped and looked at him coldly.

Jason Gordon was breathing heavily, several strands of hair falling loose from his once perfectly styled haircut, making him look unusually disheveled.

"Was the diamond ring too small?"

His brows were knitted together, his voice laced with undisguised impatience.

"How many times had I told you? The company's cash flow was tight lately. Once we secured the Southside development project, I'd buy you a ten-carat ring to make up for it!"

As I looked at the face that destroyed my family in my previous life, my stomach churned with disgust.

"Jason Gordon, did you not understand plain English?"

I wrenched my hand free.

"I said I don’t want to marry you."

"What is this nonsense now?"

He drew in a deep breath, forcing down his anger as he adopted the magnanimous air of someone bestowing mercy.

"Claire, there were so many elders and reporters here today. You embarrassed me in front of everyone, and I'm letting it slide.

"Be good. Stop making a scene and come back with me."

As he spoke, he reached for me again.

"Jason!"

A sweet, delicate voice called from behind him.

Denise Lowe gathered up the hem of her dress and hurried over in a pair of five-inch heels.

She immediately wrapped herself around Jason's arm, her eyes red as she looked at me.

"Claire, are you still angry with me?

"Jason and I really are just best friends. We were at the hotel last night going over the accounts. We only worked so late because we were swamped.

"If it bothers you, I'll never meet Jason alone again. Please don't ruin your engagement party because of me."

As she spoke, she leaned even closer against him.

Jason immediately patted her shoulder comfortingly.

"Denise, this has nothing to do with you. She's just too petty."

He turned to me, his eyes filled with reproach.

"Claire, Denise's my closest friend. Could you stop being so paranoid all the time?"

Watching the two of them play off each other in perfect harmony, I almost laughed.

In my previous life, after Jason had stripped my family's company of everything it was worth, this so-called "best friend" moved into my villa as if she owned the place.

She even wore my pajamas, standing at the top of the staircase as she sneered that I was so pathetic I couldn't even keep my own man.

"Best friend?"

I gave Denise a slow once-over.

"What kind of best friend stayed in a hotel late at night to go over the accounts, then walked away with a neck covered in hickeys?"

Denise's face turned pale, and she instinctively covered her neck.

Jason's gaze flickered for a moment before he straightened up again with renewed confidence.

"Those are mosquito bites! Claire, why do you always assume the worst?"

I couldn't be bothered arguing with them anymore and turned toward the Maybach parked by the curb.

It had been my twentieth birthday gift from my father before he passed away.

The moment I pulled open the door, the overpowering smell of greasy burgers and fries hit me in the face.

I frowned and looked inside.

Jason's mother, Linda Lane, had kicked off her shoes and propped her feet, still wrapped in torn black stockings, on the dashboard.

She was clutching a half-empty carton of fries, grease glistening around her mouth.

The leather seats were littered with greasy crumbs and stray fries.

"Oh, Claire, you're finally out."

Still chewing, Linda reached for the steering wheel with her greasy hand.

"This car's really nice. So roomy. Jason said that once you two got married, this car would be mine. It'll be perfect for driving to the farmers' market. It'll make quite the statement."

Looking at the interior she'd trashed beyond recognition, I felt my anger surge.

"Who gave you permission to get into my car?"

Linda froze for a second before rolling her eyes.

"Watch your tone. My son's about to take over your family's company. What's yours is his anyway. So, what's wrong with me sitting in my own son's car?"

Jason walked over, frowning at me.

"Claire, don't take this too far. She's my mother. So, what if she made a little mess? The driver can have it cleaned tomorrow.

"Do you really have to yell at an elder like that?"

Looking at the entitlement written all over his face, the chill in my heart only deepened.

"Jason, give me the car keys."

I held out my hand.

He instinctively covered his pocket.

"You're too emotional to drive right now. I'll hold onto them for you."

I let out a cold laugh.

"Fine. I don't want the car anymore. You and your family can keep it as your personal trash can."

I turned and walked to the roadside, hailing a taxi.

As I pulled the door open, I looked back at them.

"Jason Gordon, we're over."

It was Jason. He had become little more than skin and bones, his prison uniform hanging off his gaunt frame. The eyes that were once filled with calculation and arrogance were now bloodshot, consumed by fear and despair. The moment he saw me, he lunged toward the glass like a drowning man reaching for a lifeline."Claire! You finally came!"He snatched up the receiver, his voice hoarse and broken."Claire... I'm begging you. Please save me..."I picked up my own receiver and looked at the pitiful wreck before me.The only thing I felt was satisfaction."Save you?"A faint laugh escaped my lips."Jason, you're facing charges of large-scale corporate embezzlement and fraud. I've already spoken to my lawyer."There's a very good chance you'll spend the rest of your life behind bars."The color instantly drained from Jason's face. With a thud, he dropped to his knees and repeatedly slammed his forehead against the floor, bowing desperately despite the glass between us."Claire, I know I wa

The officer looked at Jason with a cold, unreadable expression."Jason Gordon, we've received a formal criminal complaint against you."You're suspected of corporate embezzlement, fraud, and forging official documents."You're being taken in for questioning. Come with us."Two officers stepped forward and seized him by the arms. The handcuffs snapped shut around his wrists with a sharp metallic click.Only then did Jason finally awaken from the fantasy that he still controlled everything. He struggled wildly, twisting around to stare at me."Claire! You can't do this to me! We've been together for five years! Doesn't that count for anything? I know I was wrong! I'll pay back every penny. Just tell them to let me go, please!"I stood on the stage, looking down at the pathetic man begging for mercy.I felt nothing."Our history?"A mocking smile touched my lips."Jason, when you teamed up with outsiders to strip my father's company of everything he'd built, when you used forged evidence

"You little bitch! How dare you set my son up!"Her shrill scream shattered the stunned silence.Linda charged onto the stage like a raging animal. She raised a rough hand weighed down by a gaudy gold ring and swung it straight at my face."I'm going to beat you senseless, you shameless little tramp!"I didn't move. The instant her hand came down, I shot mine up and caught her wrist.Crack!"Ahhh!"Linda let out a bloodcurdling scream.I swung my free hand and slapped her hard across the face. The sharp crack echoed through the ballroom over the microphone. The force of the blow spun Linda halfway around before she crashed onto the floor, blood trickling from the corner of her mouth."That slap was for trashing my car."I looked down at her coldly."Lay another hand on me, and I'll break it."Jason's eyes instantly turned bloodshot."Claire! You hit my mother! I'm going to kill you!"Roaring with fury, he scrambled to his feet and lunged at me.Before he could get anywhere near me, two

"Mr. Blackwood! Please, let me explain! There has to be some kind of misunderstanding!"This proposal... I didn't prepare this proposal!"He suddenly spun around and pointed at me, sitting quietly in the corner, as though he'd found his last lifeline."It was Claire Sharp! Mr. Blackwood, please listen to me! Claire put this proposal together! She was furious that I took over the company, so she deliberately manipulated the numbers to frame me!"Every eye in the ballroom turned toward me.Yuna shot to her feet, pointing at me as she shouted, "Claire! You vicious girl! Are you trying to destroy Jason and this entire family?"I remained seated on the sofa, leisurely taking a sip of my wine. Then I rose to my feet, smoothed the skirt of my dress, and made my way onto the stage under everyone's watchful gaze.Ignoring Jason's furious glare, I stopped in front of Damian and gave him a slight nod."Mr. Blackwood, it's a pleasure to meet you. I'm sorry you had to witness this."Damian looked a

"You've already signed the agreement. Don't force me to make a scene and humiliate you in front of everyone."I looked at his smug, self-satisfied face and let out a soft laugh."Fine. I won't make a scene. I'll just sit back and watch you make your grand entrance."Jason let out a cold snort before leading Denise toward the stage. The lights in the ballroom dimmed, and a single spotlight fell on him.He picked up the microphone and cleared his throat."Thank you all for taking the time to join Claire Sharp and me as we celebrate our engagement."Today also marks another milestone—Sharp Group and Mr. Damian Blackwood will officially sign the letter of intent for the Southside development project."Warm applause erupted throughout the ballroom.Jason looked out at the crowd, radiating confidence."Before we begin, I'd like to give special thanks to my fiancée, Claire. I gazed out the window at the steady stream of traffic."I'll send everything to your private email tomorrow at three."After I ended the call, my phone screen lit up.It was a message from Denise. The photo showed her wearing an extravagant custom-made wedding gown, posing shyly in front of a mirror.Jason stood behind her, gently adjusting her veil. The caption read:"Claire, Jason insisted I help him check the fit of this wedding dress. You don't mind, do you?"I looked at the photo without smashing my phone in a fit of rage like I had in my previous life.Instead, I replied in a surprisingly good mood:"It fits you perfectly. You should keep it."After all, everyone deserved a decent outfit for their final journey.I dialed another number."Chief Harris? This is Claire Sharp, Richard Sharp's daughter.""That's right. I have evidence to report a case involving corporate embezzlement and commercial fraud.""I think you'd be interested in seeing Jason Gordon's trump card.”…The secon
