Chapter Three:

The morning light crept through the grimy cabin windows in thin, pale rays that did little to cut the biting chill of the mountain air. I woke up shivering violently, my muscles stiff and aching from sleeping on the hard wooden cot.

Across the room, the fireplace was completely dead, filled with cold gray ash. Alexander was already awake. He sat at a small wooden table near the back window, sharpening an old hunting knife with a rhythmic, grating sound that set my teeth on edge. He hadn't changed his clothes, and the heavy dark shadows under his steel-gray eyes showed he hadn't slept a wink all night.

I sat up slowly, rubbing my cold arms, and looked around the cramped space. There was no food, no water, and no firewood left. If we were going to survive out here at the edge of the woods, someone had to do something.

“I’m going out to find firewood,” I said, my voice cutting through the quiet room.

Alexander paused his knife-sharpening, lifting his head slowly to look at me with a skeptical eyebrow raised. “Go ahead. The snow is knee-deep, the wild wolves outside the pack boundary are starving, and Marcus has patrol guards watching the perimeter. If you want to walk straight into a trap or freeze to death in a snowbank, be my guest.”

“I’d rather freeze outside than sit here and rot with you,” I snapped back, standing up and wrapping the thin woolen blanket tighter around my shoulders.

I walked over to the heavy oak door, pushed the deadbolt back, and stepped out into the freezing morning air. The cold hit my face like a physical slap, stealing the breath right out of my lungs. Thick white snow covered the ground as far as the eye could see, bending the pine trees under its heavy weight.

For the next two hours, I trudged through the deep snow behind the cabin, snapping dry branches off fallen pine trees and gathering them into a massive bundle in my arms. My fingers went completely numb, turning bright red and losing all feeling, but I refused to give up. Every time I wanted to quit, I thought of Alexander’s mocking face and Marcus’s cruel laughter, and a fierce, stubborn fire inside my chest pushed me forward.

As I hauled the last heavy load of branches toward the back porch, a low, guttural growl echoed through the silent trees just a few yards away.

I froze instantly, dropping the wood into the snow with a soft thud. My heart leaped straight into my throat. Emerging slowly from behind a thick cluster of snow-covered bushes was a massive gray wolf, twice the size of a normal hound, with yellow eyes glowing with hungry malice. It wasn't a pack member; it was a rogue scout, drawn by the smell of human weakness.

The rogue let out another low snarl, baring its long, razor-sharp yellow fangs, and took a slow, calculated step toward me.

Panic paralyzed my limbs. I couldn't shift into a wolf to fight back. I didn't have weapons, claws, or strength. I was completely defenseless.

Just as the rogue leaped forward through the air with a savage snarl, a dark blur erupted from the cabin door behind me.

Alexander moved with terrifying speed, despite his crippled leg. In his hand, the heavy hunting knife flashed like lightning in the pale sunlight. He slammed his body directly into the mid-air rogue, tackling the massive beast hard into the deep snow with a bone-crunching impact.

Dirt, snow, and blood flew everywhere as the two bodies rolled across the frozen ground. The rogue thrashed wildly, snapping its jaws, but Alexander pressed his full, brutal weight down upon the beast’s neck, driving his knife deep with ruthless, calculated precision.

With one final, choked gasp, the rogue went limp, staining the white snow a dark, ugly crimson.

Alexander stood up slowly, breathing heavily through his nose, and wiped a streak of blood off his cheek with the back of his hand. His steel-gray eyes locked onto mine, burning with fierce annoyance.

“Are you completely stupid?” Alexander barked, his voice echoing through the silent woods. “A rogue scout smells human fear from a mile away, and you’re standing out here with no weapon like a walking invitation for dinner!”

Instead of shrinking away, I felt a strange surge of adrenaline steadying my shaking hands. I looked from the dead rogue down to Alexander’s bleeding shoulder where the beast had managed to scratch him during the scuffle.

“You’re bleeding,” I said quietly, pointing toward his torn sleeve.

Alexander glanced down at his shoulder as if he hadn’t even noticed the wound. “It’s nothing. I’ve had worse.”

“It’s infected if you leave it in this cold,” I replied stubbornly, walking past him, picking up my bundle of firewood, and heading straight back into the cabin.

Alexander stood outside for a long moment, staring after me in pure disbelief, before heavily dragging his leg back inside and slamming the door shut against the freezing wind.

“What in the name of the ancestors are you?” Thomas’s voice shook violently as he dropped his sword into the slush on the cabin floor, his eyes wide and bloodshot with absolute terror. He stared at me as if I were a ghost risen from the dead, his hands trembling at his sides. I stood frozen beside the stone hearth, my right hand still tingling faintly from the blinding explosion of golden light that had just sent Thomas's guard flying through the door. My chest rose and fell in heavy, ragged gasps as the adrenaline slowly ebbed away, leaving a strange, vibrating hum beneath my skin. I looked down at my palms, terrified of what I had just done. For eighteen years, everyone in the Silver Moon pack—including myself—had believed I was a useless StillBlood, an empty vessel with no wolf and no power. But the glowing light that had burst from my fingers was real, burning hot and impossibly powerful. Alexander didn't say a word. He stood motionless only a few feet away, his steel-gray eyes

For the first time since I arrived, the room actually felt halfway habitable.I sat on a wooden stool near the fire, holding a small bowl of melted snow water and a torn strip of clean cloth. Across from me, Alexander sat on the edge of his wooden cot, staring blankly at the floor while I carefully cleaned the deep scratch on his shoulder with the warm water.Every time the wet cloth touched his torn skin, his massive muscles twitched slightly, but he didn't make a single sound. He was stubborn to a fault.“You don’t have to do that,” Alexander muttered gruffly, staring straight ahead.“If you get blood poisoning and die in this cabin, Marcus will just send another useless chore girl, and I’d rather not risk getting someone even worse,” I replied dryly, pressing a homemade herbal poultice—made from some dried leaves Evelyn the healer had once secretly gi

The door slammed shut behind me with a loud, final thud, followed by the heavy clank of a deadbolt sliding into place from the outside. I was locked in.I slowly pushed myself up off the floor, brushing the thick layer of dust off my torn dress, and looked around my new prison. The cabin was pitch black except for the faint, flickering orange light coming from a small stone fireplace in the corner. Chapter One“Dirt belongs on the ground, Mia, not walking around pretending to be a wolf!”Isabella’s laughter echoed off the cold stone walls of the pack kitchen as she slammed a heavy wooden bucket of dirty washwater against my shins. The sharp pain shot straight up my bone, but I did not cry out. Crying only made them hit harder. I bit down on my lower lip until I tasted iron and kept my head bowed, staring at the muddy slush pooling around my bare feet.In the Silver Moon pack, weakness was a crime punishable by endless cruelty. Everyone in the pack had an inner wolf that howled at the moon, shifted into heavy fur, and carried the fierce strength of predators. Everyone except me. They called me a StillBlood. My wolf was fast asleep, trapped in endless silence, leaving me completely human and completely helpless in a world ruled by fangs and claws.“Pick it up before I break your other leg, useless trash,” Isabella sneered, wiping a smudge of soot off her pristine white blouse befo
