*Two days later*

‘’~Happy birthday to you.’’ I sang along with Logan’s mother, Logan and Stephanie, celebrating my son’s fifth birthday.

‘’Make a wish, baby.’’ I tell him with a proud smile, and Lucian blew out the number five-shaped candle on a small cake with a wide toothed grin.

‘’Hurray!’’ We all clap our hands, and Lucian joined in with an excited giggle.

‘’Can I eat cake now?’’ He asks, his eyes sparkling with anticipation. The sheer cuteness nearly broke my resolve, but I held firm for the sake of his health.

‘’No, you can’t, Lucian.’’ I reach out to take off his birthday hat but he dodged my hands with a stubborn little shake of his head.

‘’No, mama.’’

‘’Alright.’’ I give in to the birthday boy and settled back in my seat.

‘’Lena, what time are you leaving?’’ Stephanie glances my way as she assisted Logan’s mother in stirring the pancake batter. Logan, on the other hand, was seated by my side on his phone.

I look down at my wristwatch briefly. ‘’Ten, I guess.’’
