It was very early in the morning and the sound of the alarm was very loud, Lucy Jade's was, anyway.
When Lucy couldn't get up, she whimpered and tried to get up. Her body was tired but she put it aside as she normally would. She wasn't able to get a good night's rest.
Maya lay down by her in a rich silk blanket, sleeping peacefully, without a care.
At times, Lucy was envious of her.
Not because Maya was as well off as God.
Since she knew what peace was Maya was silent.
Lucy gazed on the pile of outstanding bills lying on the little desk beside her bed. Tuition balance. Book fees. Electricity contribution. Feeding allowance.
Her chest tightened.
Another month.
Another struggle.
She took a deep breath in and stood up.
"You're awake already?" Maya's eye was half open and she mumbled sleepily as if.
Lucy smiled tiredly. Good morning, it's morning shift at the caf‚.
Maya sat up a bit, her golden hair falling from her shoulders. "You" said that Lucy didn't get much sleep.
"I slept enough."
"That's a lie."
Then Lucy laughed, as she put on her huge hoodie. No work, no eat!
Maya frowned. "At some point you will crack due to stress."
Lucy picked up her purse. "Not today."
When she went outside the dormitory building at the beginning of the morning, her skin was hit by the cold air.
A quiet campus, the above mentioned well-to-do ones were in their luxurious apartment and hostels and Lucy was running on the empty walkway to the bus stop.
Unlike them she didn't own a car.
No parents.
No family support.
Only debt.
It took her 20 minutes to get to the caf‚.
She was quickly filled with the scent of coffee beans, hot baked goods.
"Good Morning, Lucy," replied Mr Harrison.
Lucy's face was beaming with a smile. "Morning, sir."
"You're early again."
"I like early."
No Sir, I don't like it," he corrected, "no." "You like living."
Lucy laughed awkwardly, and placed her apron over her waist.
Slowly the caf‚ filled up as the morning progressed.
Customers were turning up and taking off.
Orders were coming in from all quarters.
Lucy however went on her journey.
Taking orders.
Cleaning tables.
Serving drinks.
Smiling through exhaustion.
She was not experiencing any pain in her legs at night time!
Nevertheless, she kept on working.
They believed that the price was too steep, if they halted.
But minds were on the loss of all things.
I heard my co-workers yelling out "Table seven!"
Lucy then took the tray and went to the other side of the room that was near the glass windows.
She had arrived there, and reduced her speed a little.
There was one person who was sitting by himself at the table.
Tall.
He was dressed in a very ostentatious and imposing black suit.
He certainly did have that chiseled jaw line, his golden brown eyes were glassy and outside the town.
He had a kind of energy, a power in him.
The kind that made people feel uncomfortable when around.
Before she goes towards him Lucy drinks a sip of water and swallows it silently.
"Your coffee, sir."
Lastly, the man looked at the woman.
Just for a brief instant.
All was very quiet.
He was beginning to scrutinize the face, to examine and look into it, as if to weigh it.
Lucy ran around, under his watch.
However, she remarked courteously, "Is there something else I can do?"
He was gazing at her tanned face.
"You look exhausted."
Lucy blinked.
That won't have taken much note of.
All they cared about is getting their coffee to them on time.
Her face twitched with a grimace in her expression. "Long day."
However, you have a smile on your face."
"That's just the way things are done.
There was a hint of a smile on his face.
NO, I did NOT say `yes,' whispered he. "That's a part of you."
Lucy was not sure how the words had an impact on her.
Perhaps no one had been courteous towards her for a really long time.
In no time at all she had turned her head from the group. "My pleasure, sir."
However, before she could escape, her other stoppage from his deep voice.
"What's your name?"
"Lucy."
"Lucy. " he repeated his words, as if to himself.
Then he took out of his wallet a few crisp bills and he put them on the table.
Lucy's eyes constricted just a little bit.
It was almost a whole week's salary for her to have!
She was astonished and her mouth gaped open.
Sir, it's too much.
"It's not enough."
Her heart was beating a rapid pace, which she hadn't anticipated.
Man with a sleek, expensive watch on his wrist, standing upright, with hands on hips, adjusting his watch.
"Goodnight, Lucy."
Then, in a flash he walked away.
Lucy was standing by a table, her body motionless like a rock.
Lack of an appreciation for money.
He was peering through the door which he had disappeared through.
She wasn't even familiar with the name of him.
But somehow.
But, now she had a good situation.
Lucy tried not to stare at him.She failed miserably.Hart Matthew sat across from her with the calm confidence of a man who owned everything around him.Maybe he did.Even the restaurant staff treated him differently.Respectfully.Carefully.Almost fearfully.Meanwhile Lucy sat stiffly in her chair trying not to panic over the five different forks placed beside her plate."You're nervous," Hart observed calmly."I wonder why."A faint smirk touched his lips."You dislike luxury places.""I dislike places where the water probably costs more than my monthly transport fare."That actually made him laugh softly. The sound caught her off guard again.Lucy blinked."You laugh?""Occasionally.""You should do it more often. You look less terrifying."Hart leaned back slightly, golden-brown eyes fixed on her."Terrifying?""You walked into my campus with enough security to start a small war.""That was minimal."Lucy stared at him in disbelief.Rich people were insane.A waiter arrived mome
Lucy spent the entire night staring at the contract papers. The neatly printed pages sat on her desk like a life-changing decision waiting to happen.Because that was exactly what it was.Her future. One signature could erase every debt suffocating her.One signature could change her entire life forever.Yet instead of relief.Lucy felt terrified."You've been staring at those papers for three hours," Maya said from her bed.Lucy sighed heavily. "I know.""And?""And what?""Are you going to marry the insanely hot billionaire CEO or not?"Lucy threw a pillow at her immediately.Maya burst into laughter."I'm serious," Lucy muttered. "This whole thing feels insane."Maya sat up properly this time. "Okay, jokes aside. what are you really scared of?"Lucy fell silent. What was she scared of?Everything. The contract. The secrecy.Vanessa.Hart Matthew himself. There was something deeply overwhelming about him.The way he looked at her.The way he spoke like he already owned the room. The
The hush that ensued seemed like the dead of night.Lucy's eyes widened in a flash. The blonde woman was utterly astounded."What?" she whispered. He created all this chaos and yet Hart Matthew was perfectly at ease by his side. But Lucy was close to losing her heart!Future wife? Was he insane?Suddenly the woman laughed, but it was not a laughing sound."Matthew," she whispered, "this is no joke.""It just didn't work out.Her face turned into a grimace in no time. Now Lucy could sense the hatred emanating from him.Sharp.Burning.Personal.The woman folded her arms tightly tight before looking Lucy up and down with open disgust. There was no question about it in her eyes.Oversized hoodie.Old sneakers.Cheap bag.Lucy was suddenly acutely conscious of how normal she felt with a figure like Hart Matthew. The woman scoffed, "This?" "You're taking the place of a man like me with. this?"Lucy's face turned as red as a beetroot. She couldn't get her mind to think quickly enough, and H
Lucy truly thought she couldn't breathe. All the noises around her ceased.Pupils continued to circulate around school.Taxis continued to drive by.People still whispered. But all of this did not reach her ears.Because there was a sentence that was repeating itself in her mind."Marry me, Lucy."Her lips opened slightly, in shock."What?"Hart Matthew's face was placid, expressionless."Seldom do I repeat myself."Lucy looked at him as if he had lost his mind.Maya appeared as if she was about to cry."Well, I think I must be having a hallucination," Maya whispered dramatically next to her. After a lot of difficulty, Lucy was able to speak. "Mr Matthew, I believe that there is some misunderstanding here.""There isn't.""You don't know me very well.""I know enough."Lucy frowned harder. "No normal person would propose marriage to a stranger."There was a slight smile on his face."I'm not normal."It was an answer that irked her more than it should.Lucy clasped her arms fervently.
It was a night where Lucy didn't get much sleep. He was too imbedded in her mind and she was not going to forget the caf‚ man.His voice. His eyes. His creepy attention towards her.And the money. As she was just about to shriek behind her, she noticed the piles of bills that were piled in front of her on her desk."Lucy Jade!" Maya gasped dramatically. "Who did you serve? The president?"Lucy laughed as she couldn't help but. "Stop it.""I'm serious!" Maya came up to her and gently took off the cash. It's a crazy tip?Slowly Lucy shook her head. "Well, I did attempt to get it back.""And?"It was `not enough', he said.Maya's eyes widened. He's quite a stalker, isn't he?Lucy was surprised and instantly, both of Lucy's eyes blinked out. "Maya.""What? Don't be deceived by old, corpulent men: they don't buy anything at all times.Lucy quietly turned her head away. She did not have to lie since she knew that what she told him was true, but Maya was correct. But it was this time, someth
