It was very early in the morning and the sound of the alarm was very loud, Lucy Jade's was, anyway.
When Lucy couldn't get up, she whimpered and tried to get up. Her body was tired but she put it aside as she normally would. She wasn't able to get a good night's rest.
Maya lay down by her in a rich silk blanket, sleeping peacefully, without a care.
At times, Lucy was envious of her.
Not because Maya was as well off as God.
Since she knew what peace was Maya was silent.
Lucy gazed on the pile of outstanding bills lying on the little desk beside her bed. Tuition balance. Book fees. Electricity contribution. Feeding allowance.
Her chest tightened.
Another month.
Another struggle.
She took a deep breath in and stood up.
"You're awake already?" Maya's eye was half open and she mumbled sleepily as if.
Lucy smiled tiredly. Good morning, it's morning shift at the caf‚.
Maya sat up a bit, her golden hair falling from her shoulders. "You" said that Lucy didn't get much sleep.
"I slept enough."
"That's a lie."
Then Lucy laughed, as she put on her huge hoodie. No work, no eat!
Maya frowned. "At some point you will crack due to stress."
Lucy picked up her purse. "Not today."
When she went outside the dormitory building at the beginning of the morning, her skin was hit by the cold air.
A quiet campus, the above mentioned well-to-do ones were in their luxurious apartment and hostels and Lucy was running on the empty walkway to the bus stop.
Unlike them she didn't own a car.
No parents.
No family support.
Only debt.
It took her 20 minutes to get to the caf‚.
She was quickly filled with the scent of coffee beans, hot baked goods.
"Good Morning, Lucy," replied Mr Harrison.
Lucy's face was beaming with a smile. "Morning, sir."
"You're early again."
"I like early."
No Sir, I don't like it," he corrected, "no." "You like living."
Lucy laughed awkwardly, and placed her apron over her waist.
Slowly the caf‚ filled up as the morning progressed.
Customers were turning up and taking off.
Orders were coming in from all quarters.
Lucy however went on her journey.
Taking orders.
Cleaning tables.
Serving drinks.
Smiling through exhaustion.
She was not experiencing any pain in her legs at night time!
Nevertheless, she kept on working.
They believed that the price was too steep, if they halted.
But minds were on the loss of all things.
I heard my co-workers yelling out "Table seven!"
Lucy then took the tray and went to the other side of the room that was near the glass windows.
She had arrived there, and reduced her speed a little.
There was one person who was sitting by himself at the table.
Tall.
He was dressed in a very ostentatious and imposing black suit.
He certainly did have that chiseled jaw line, his golden brown eyes were glassy and outside the town.
He had a kind of energy, a power in him.
The kind that made people feel uncomfortable when around.
Before she goes towards him Lucy drinks a sip of water and swallows it silently.
"Your coffee, sir."
Lastly, the man looked at the woman.
Just for a brief instant.
All was very quiet.
He was beginning to scrutinize the face, to examine and look into it, as if to weigh it.
Lucy ran around, under his watch.
However, she remarked courteously, "Is there something else I can do?"
He was gazing at her tanned face.
"You look exhausted."
Lucy blinked.
That won't have taken much note of.
All they cared about is getting their coffee to them on time.
Her face twitched with a grimace in her expression. "Long day."
However, you have a smile on your face."
"That's just the way things are done.
There was a hint of a smile on his face.
NO, I did NOT say `yes,' whispered he. "That's a part of you."
Lucy was not sure how the words had an impact on her.
Perhaps no one had been courteous towards her for a really long time.
In no time at all she had turned her head from the group. "My pleasure, sir."
However, before she could escape, her other stoppage from his deep voice.
"What's your name?"
"Lucy."
"Lucy. " he repeated his words, as if to himself.
Then he took out of his wallet a few crisp bills and he put them on the table.
Lucy's eyes constricted just a little bit.
It was almost a whole week's salary for her to have!
She was astonished and her mouth gaped open.
Sir, it's too much.
"It's not enough."
Her heart was beating a rapid pace, which she hadn't anticipated.
Man with a sleek, expensive watch on his wrist, standing upright, with hands on hips, adjusting his watch.
"Goodnight, Lucy."
Then, in a flash he walked away.
Lucy was standing by a table, her body motionless like a rock.
Lack of an appreciation for money.
He was peering through the door which he had disappeared through.
She wasn't even familiar with the name of him.
But somehow.
But, now she had a good situation.
Hart didn't breathe. His gaze was on the unoccupied side of the bed.The blanket was still warm. But Lucy was gone."Lucy?"No answer. He went around the bathroom.Empty.The balcony.Empty.His heart raced crazily."Lucy!"He went into the hall."Security!"Ethan came out of the other corridor in less than a few seconds."Sir?""Where is my wife?"Ethan's expression changed.“She was in your room.”"She isn't now.""What?"He was picked up on the shoulder by Hart.Lock up the house!Ethan hurriedly pulled out his cell phone.Everyone, Code Black, everybody stays at the estate.Throughout the mansion, the alarms started going off.The security guards went into the corridors.Hart ran downstairs."Check every exit!""Yes, sir!""Search the gardens!""Yes, sir!"“Look in the basement garage,”Ethan came in second."Sir, no one has come out the outside guards haven't seen anybody leave. She's still here, then.Hart stopped. His mind raced.Somebody had gone off with Lucy but not raised t
Lucy stared at Hart. She was unable to take in what he just said for several seconds.“Are they going to kidnap me?”His fingers gripped her, firm, tight."Yes."Her heart started to beat rapidly."Who?""I don't know yet."But how is it possible to know?Hart's jaw tightened.“He or she who left that file knew exactly what he/she was doing.”He tightened his embrace and drew her to him."And I'm not going to wait until they make their move."Lucy swallowed."What are you going to do?""Protect you.""How?"His eyes hardened.“You shall never leave this mansion.”Lucy stared at him."What?""Until I know who is behind this, you're staying here."Hart, I'm in class."No.""My exams—""No.""My job—""I'll handle it."Lucy pulled her hand from his.“They can't shut me up in this house!”Hart looked at her.I don't want to control you.If only I could just tell you what I'm doing?I'm here to save YOU!His voice was suddenly loud and harsh.Lucy fell silent.Hart took a deep breath and t
The bedroom door handle slowly turned.Lucy stopped breathing.Hart rushed forward and went to stand in front of her.One arm resting behind him, telling her to stay out of it.Everything about him had changed. The teasing husband of just a few moments was now gone. The ruthless CEO that everyone was afraid of stood in his place. The handle was moved again.Slowly.Hart's eyes narrowed. He looked over to the bedside table. His cellphone was there. No signal.Security system was still all off."Ethan," Hart whispered.Nothing.He pressed the intercom once again.Have everyone move to the east side of the building.Static answered him.Lucy held on to his back of his shirt."Hart..."He glanced over his shoulder."I'm here."What shall we do?"Stay behind me.""But—""Lucy."His voice softened."Please."That one word brought her to a halt.Hart was very rarely polite. She nodded."Okay."He looked back towards the door. The handle came to a stop.Silence.Five seconds passed. Then ten.
Lucy remained motionless at the door to Hart's bedroom. The room was dominated by a king-sized bed, which was covered with dark wooden frames and luxurious grey silk sheets. She swallowed nervously. Is there any other bed?Hart shut the door after them."No."Lucy sighed.I wanted one to magically appear, said I.“There are no miracles, I don't do miracles. She crossed her arms."No?""No.""You've disappointed me."It was the first time that evening that Hart smiled.I will work more diligently when I go to work next morning.Lucy blinked.Was... was he joking? She pointed at him."You're smiling again.""I am.""And making jokes.""I'm adapting.""To what?"His eyes met hers.Life together with my wife.Lucy's cheeks got red.Lucy's cheeks turned red, immediately. She didn't wait long before she turned away without him noticing.Hart went to the wardrobe and grabbed a well-packed oversized black T-shirt.He gave it to her."Sleeping will be easier in this.Lucy studied the T-shirt."
The night's cool breeze fluttered on the balcony.Using both hands, Lucy held a mug of hot chocolate, trying to soothe her roaring heart. Then, the words of Hart echoed in her mind, and never went away.Well if I had known this was going to happen I would have married you sooner. She raised her gaze to him.His face was appeased, but his eyes were now shining with something she had never before seen."Hart..."Before she could ask him his question:Ethan ran out onto the balcony."Sir!"There was no doubt that Hart was now taking it seriously."What happened?"The east fence in the garden had its motion sensors set off.Lucy's hands tightly gripped the mug.“Has somebody been there in the house?”Ethan nodded. It's been a while since we have witnessed fresh tracks in our security people.Hart's eyes darkened.“Have they arrested the intruder?”"No."The area guards arrived he was gone.Hart didn't hesitate.Lock up the entire property."Already in progress."I want to retrieve all the
The trip back to the Matthews Mansion was a quiet one.Lucy was sitting next to Hart as she repeated Ethan's words in her head.“Photos of you months before you were wed…”She held her arms around her body. She was filled with a peculiar anxiety that settled into her heart. She'd never met Adrian Blackwood before. Then why was he watching her?Hart breathed out a gasp at the trembling of her fingers. He reached out and laid his hand over her, but didn't say another word. His palm was warm.Steady.Grounding.Lucy looked at him.“Don't worry me.”The tip of his thumb ran across the back of her hand."I know.""Then why are you?"His golden eyes never strayed from the road."Because you're scared."Lucy attempted to make light of it."I'm not—"“You've been making a ring of rings for the past five minutes.”She looked down.He was right. She wasn't even aware that she was doing it.“Do you notice everything, you?”"When it comes to you..."He paused."I try to."A faint blush crept onto
