The photograph trembled in my hands,..
My mother's smile was genuinely unmistakable.
She looked younger, Happier and Alive.
Standing beside her was a man I vaguely recognized.
Dark amber eyes,
A calm smile,
A familiar face like a striking resemblance.
For one strange moment, relief flooded through me.
"Oh."
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Kaizen frowned.
I pointed at the picture.
"I know him."
His entire body stiffened.
"You do?"
I nodded immediately, I could see clearly his curious look.
"Mom used to talk about him."
Hope flickered briefly across his face, which disappeared almost immediately.
"She said he was an old family friend."
Silence engulfed the room….
The kind that felt heavy.
I looked down at the photograph again.
"He helped her years ago."
My fingers brushed the faded edge.
"She said he was one of the few good people she knew."
“Why do you have it”?
Kaizen's jaw tightened.
Something about my answer bothered him a lot.
"But..." he started carefully.
I looked up.
"But what?"
His gray eyes searched mine.
Then he glanced at the surname written faintly behind the photograph.
Solenne.
The same surname,
The same name,
The same mystery,... So why aren't they related ?
"You share his surname."
I laughed bitterly.
"So?"
His expression darkened.
"Nyra.. it's fine if you don't.."
"No."
I shook my head immediately.
My stomach twisted.
I already knew where he was going.
"No."
"Just listen, My mother never told me I had a father."
The words came out sharper than intended.
Painfully sharp because they hurt, bcause they were true.
I had spent years wondering.
Years pretending it didn't matter.
Years convincing myself I didn't care.
But I did.
I really wished I grew up with a father.
Every child wonders…
Every child wants answers…
Yet my mother never gave me any.
Not once, not ever.
"I don't know who my father is."
My voice lowered.
"And if she wanted me to know..."
I swallowed hard. "She would've told me."
Kaizen said nothing.
The silence between us felt colder than the basement itself.
Eventually he led me out.
Neither of us spoke on our way back to the penthouse.
The city lights blurred outside the window.
My thoughts were worse…the missing students, underground fights, the photograph, the lies , this school amongst all KAIZEN!.
Everything hurt, everything felt wrong….
By the time we reached the penthouse, exhaustion sat heavily on my shoulders.
I wanted sleep, I wanted answers, most importantly I wanted distance from Kaizen Arclair which I don't think will be possible because I'm stuck with him.
Stuck with this Jerk as a Lodgemate and a Tutor. The boy had practically dragged me into a living nightmare.
I had honestly believed he'd kidnapped me, that somehow that made me hate him even more.
I slammed my bedroom door shut behind me.
Finally..peace. Or so I thought. Ten minutes later, his voice echoed from outside.
"Nyra."
I froze.
No.
Absolutely not.
"Nyra."
The audacity.
My eye twitched.
I stormed toward the door and yanked it open.
"What?!"
Kaizen stood in the hallway.
Expression blank, cold and unreadable..not a trace of his usual annoying smirk.
"We're continuing the tutorial."
I stared at him, then laughed.
A short…disbelieving laugh.
"Are you insane?"
His expression didn't change.
"Come out." He comanded me.
"I almost got trafficked into a basement full of missing students!"
"You're exaggerating."
"Oh, I'm exaggerating?!"
Anger exploded through me.
"You are a jerk."
"A liar."
"A criminal."
His jaw tightened….Good.
I stepped closer.
"You know what?"
My voice shook, ready to drop another bombshell…
"You're worse than a criminal."
“You're devilish, I wish I never met you”
Something snapped inside me.
"You're a monster."
The atmosphere changed instantly.
Dangerously, Kaizen's eyes darkened.
For the first time since meeting him…I saw genuine rage.
Raw, violent, uncontrolled rage that frightens people and frightened me too….
"Take that back."
His voice came out low and deadly.
My pulse quickened.
"No."
"Nyra."
"No."
He took two steps until he stood directly in front of me towering and terrifying..
"Take it back."
My fear turned into stubbornness, the worst combination possible.
"Make me."
The second the words left my mouth, I regretted them.
Kaizen slammed his fist into the wall beside my head.
The impact cracked loudly through the hallway.
I jumped…..
It was hard that the wall dented.
Blood immediately split across his knuckles.
My heart pounded violently.
Neither of us moved.
Kaizen stared at the blood dripping from his hand.
Then at me.
And suddenly all the anger vanished, horror replaced it… Not at me but at himself, his breathe became uneven, like he'd completely lost control for a second and hated himself for it.
"Dammit."
He stepped back.
Then punched the wall again.
Harder and more fiercely..
Blood splattered.
"Kaizen"
“I'll take back my words, please stop hurting yourself”
Another punch and more…..
"Stop!!"
He didn't bulge, The sound echoed.
I was crying and yelling…. Too scared to go close to him because I can't hold him down.
“Whatever made you take me to the basement is scary, I thought you were trying to protect me…. Please stop for God's sake, I'm traumatized!!! Kaizennnn”
Brutal and Desperate, obviously punishing himself.
My chest tightened,
Fear, Confusion….
Everything collided together…
My lungs suddenly felt strange and tight,..too tight .
Not now….
I tried inhaling, but it felt suffocating instead.
Panic surged instantly.
My fingers clawed at my throat.
I needed air.
Kaizen turned sharply, not hearing my crying voice..
His face was drained of color seeing me crouched on the ground….
"Nyra?"
My vision blurred…. no ..no no no, not an attack. Please not now…. Still gasping for air, I reached towards him weakly.
"Kai..."
His eyes
widened as real fear flashed across his face, the strongest emotion I'd ever seen from him.
"Kai...zen..."
My chest burned.
"Asth…….."
The word wouldn't come out.
His expression shattered.
"Nyra."
I couldn't breathe.
Darkness swallowed everything.
The last thing I heard was Kaizen screaming my name..,
Keep exploring my wonderful readers......
Nyra's Pov The first thing I heard was laughter,..Loud, Annoying, Infuriating laughter!!I groaned and buried my face deeper into the pillow, whoever was laughing by this time of the night deserves imprisonment. Frr!!Then the laughter came again, deliberately Closer this time."Strongest woman in the City of Vancouver"I froze…that voice."Honestly, Tutor Nyra, I was expecting you to wake up at sunrise and start yelling."“Oh Kaizen …get up sleepy head”“You're late for lectures”... He is mimicking me…My eyes snapped open.Kaizen sat on the couch across the room, one leg thrown over the armrest, Coffee in one hand.. looking way too pleased with himself. The sunlight pouring through the windows nearly blinded me, I looked at the clock, blinked, then looked again. Then I screamed from my room. "OH MY GOD!"Kaizen nearly choked on his coffee."It's eleven.""ELEVEN?!"I launched myself out of bed, straight to the living room. I immediately regretted it because Every muscle in my b
The walk back to the penthouse was unusually quiet. The air seemed to be fresher than when they were in the underground empire. It was almost 3am in the morning. The campus looked completely different at this hour, Empty pathways…Silent buildings, Dark windows. The world felt asleep, Only the two of us remained awake. And somehow...Neither of us knew what to say.Kaizen walked a few steps ahead of me.His black duffel bag rested heavily against his shoulder. The same bag now stuffed with money.Money earned through bruises, Through blood, Through pain, Through sacrifice.I couldn't stop staring at it…because now I knew what that money represented.Hospital bills, Medication, Specialists, His mother's survival…that was all that mattered to him right now.Every dollar inside that bag had cost him something, Sometimes his body,Sometimes his pride, Sometimes both. The realization sat heavily in my chest.****Kaizen looked exhausted, Not only physically, but Emotionally exhausted…The ki
Suddenly, the air becomes too choky…Nyra runs out, Not thinking, Not breathing…Not processing anything anymore she was Just running.Hoping to get to the penthouse as fast as she could, Kaizen literally warned her to leave. The arena noises still ring inside her ears, the chants, the blood, the money, the violence…Kaizen, his fights with all the opponents… Jeez…Everything replaying in her head could make her explode. Boom!!She crashes into someone hard, Not Kaizen. Two security men immediately grab her, "Where do you think you're going?"Nyra freezes. The larger guard yanks her hood down.Thankfully her cap stays on, the darkness helps."New kid?""Looks like it."Nyra says nothing, because her voice will expose her immediately… fear had almost made her scream aloud but she decided to act smart. The guard shoves her forward."Trying to leave before your shift?"Shift? What shift? Her heart nearly stops, Suddenly she's seeing more Boys…young boys precisely, there was no single fe
A few minutes ago, the dangerous noise scared the hell out of me but that has only increased my curiosity to know what's happening in there… The corridor seemed colder the deeper we went, the concrete walls, flickering lights.Silence…..the kind of silence that made your skin crawl, I could feel my heart thumping hard against my chest. My heart hammered violently against my ribs, it hurt, but I kept on following Kaizen through the underground passageway.Every instinct told me to turn around, Every instinct told me this was a terrible idea…Unfortunately...Curiosity has always been my worst flaw.I could remember when I tailed a customer, to a secret hideout just to confirm my suspicion about a theft that occurred around the cafe where I once worked, I caught him and called the police with a private number to remain anonymous. It was risky but I still did it.And tonight, it was winning. Suddenly Kaizen stopped, His shoulders stiffened…His head snapped toward a large steel do
I knew he was planning to dodge the tutorial, The moment I stepped into the kitchen and saw him cooking at seven in the evening, I knew…Kaizen Arclair never cooked this early, not unless he was preparing to disappear.Again!I stood quietly near the hallway entrance, pretending not to watch him.The silly Jerk moved around the kitchen with suspicious efficiency…. Fast and cunning, Looking around like a thief. Eggs, Cheese, Bread, Coffee…for dinner.Everything prepared with alarming speed, Like a man trying to complete a mission before getting caught. My eyes narrowed, Suspicious….Very suspicious.Auren had returned to high school that afternoon after the weekend which means there was nobody left to stop Kaizen from vanishing into the night.Which meant, He was absolutely trying to escape before our tutorial session. And more importantly...Before telling me the truth, my irritation grew into disgust. The liar! The coward! The annoying, frustrating, secretive jerk….After making me w
The drive back to the penthouse was unusually quiet. Not awkward, not hostile, Just quiet. The kind of silence that settles after an emotional day….The city lights of Vancouver blurred outside the windows while soft music played from the speakers.Auren had fallen asleep in the backseat few minutes ago, his head rested against the window, his arms folded across his chest..For once, the energetic boy wasn't talking, the hospital had exhausted him and judging from the shadows beneath Kaizen's eyes…It had exhausted him too, I sat quietly beside him, Stealing glances occasionally.Okay.More than occasionally, the problem was...I couldn't stop thinking about everything I had seen today. The Kaizen everyone knew wasn't real, The campus kingThe rich playboy. The arrogant flirt.None of it was real.Or maybe it was, Just not all of him.. Because behind all those masks was a son fighting desperately to save his mother.A son carrying burdens nobody knew about. And somehow…..That version

The nurse smiled warmly as she adjusted the IV attached to my hand."You know," she said casually, checking the monitor beside my bed, "your boyfriend almost gave everyone in this hospital a heart attack."I frowned."My what?"She looked surprised, "The young man who brought you in."There was a b
"Nyra!"The sound of her body hitting the floor echoed through the penthouse.Kaizen's heart stopped, For one horrifying second, he couldn't move, Couldn't think, Couldn't breathe….Then panic exploded inside him."Nyra!"He dropped beside her instantly….Her eyes were closed and her face had gone p
