POV THESSA

There is no sadder spectacle in this world than a uniformed doorman judging your worth by how worn the seams of your shoes happen to be.

The rattling old taxi I arrived in gave a metallic groan and coughed a thick cloud of grey smoke before pulling up right outside the Grand Hotel Lumière, the very heart of the capital's old money and polished hypocrisy. The moment I set foot on that rich crimson carpet, the doorman on duty did not even bother stepping down the two short steps. He simply stood with his arms crossed, his gaze traveling slowly over my simple washed-linen dress and the complete absence of any luggage, his expression nothing short of dismissive.

"Miss, the entrance for staff and cleaning interviews is around the back alley," he said, his tone that practiced, venomous politeness luxury employees reserved for people they preferred not to see. "The main marquee is exclusively for guests with active membership."

I stood right where I was. That regal bearing the system had settled over me let me hold his gaze without so much as blinking, my calm so steady and unshakable the young man actually cleared his throat, visibly unsettled by the fact I was not shrinking back the way he expected me to.

"Step aside from my path before I buy this building and put you to scrubbing the basement restrooms with your own toothbrush," I replied, my voice soft, smooth, and cold enough that he took an actual step backward purely out of instinct.

I pushed through the heavy reinforced glass revolving doors and stepped inside the lobby. The air smelled of fresh lilies, warm beeswax polish, and expensive designer perfume, all glowing beneath massive Bohemian crystal chandeliers. At the reception desk ahead, three women with perfectly neat hairstyles were attending to a distinguished couple of foreign diplomats.

I walked over to the one station that was free. The receptionist, a sharp blonde woman wearing a gold nameplate that read, Beatrice, glanced up from her screen. Her practiced professional smile died the instant her eyes took in my modest clothing.

"Good afternoon. How may I assist you?" she said, barely concealing a sigh. "If you are looking for the public restrooms, they are located near the escalators on the lower level."

"I have a reservation," I told her calmly. "Under the name, Thessa Hyde. The Imperial Suite."

A muffled huff escaped her nose before she could stop it.

"I beg your pardon, Miss, but the Imperial Suite costs fifty thousand dollars per night and is available only through diplomatic invitation or direct shareholders of the hotel consortium. Perhaps you meant a standard room at the hostel on the next avenue? If I may see some identification..."

I did not pull out a worn plastic card or an old wallet.

Instead, I slipped two fingers into my skirt pocket and slid across the black marble counter a sleek matte-titanium card with a mirror finish, the one the system had placed in my possession the moment I signed those divorce papers. There were no commercial bank logos anywhere on it, just a platinum-plated biometric chip and the embossed seal of a private Swiss financial institution.

Beatrice frowned with clear disdain, picked the card up gingerly between two fingers as though it might soil her gloves, and slid it through the fast card reader, fully expecting that familiar, unpleasant beep of rejection due to insufficient funds.

Instead, the terminal chimed three clear, harmonious notes.

The hotel system touchscreen blinked, shifting from soft green to a brilliant, glowing gold. Across every single monitor at the reception desk, a high-priority alert lit up in bold red letters:

[GLOBAL ELITE PLATINUM CLIENT — SSS CLEARANCE — UNRESTRICTED FULL ACCESS]

All the color drained from Beatrice's face, vanishing faster than if she had been blotted out with ink. Her eyes widened so far I genuinely thought they might pop right out of her head, and her hands began trembling over the keyboard until she nearly knocked the passport scanner clean off its stand.

"Miss... Miss Hyde..." she stammered, her voice cracking, beads of sudden nervous sweat forming on her forehead. "Please... accept my most sincere apologies. There was a synchronization error with the central system. The Imperial Suite is already prepared and has been kept at a comfortable twenty-two degrees since early this morning."

"There is no need to tremble, my dear," I told her, resting my elbows comfortably on the counter with lazy, effortless elegance. "For now, send the sales directors from the three finest boutiques in the hotel arcade up to my suite. I want designer apparel, shoes, silk lingerie, and a curated selection of fine day jewelry. They have twenty minutes to set up a private viewing in my living room. If they take twenty-one, I will cancel my entire stay, and I will personally explain to the consortium owners exactly why they just lost a guaranteed seven-figure account."

"Right away, Madam! — I mean, Miss Hyde!" Beatrice squeaked, bowing so deeply she nearly bumped her forehead against the marble as she practically scrambled for the intercom, panic and urgency mixing in equal measure.

A bright, musical chime rang inside my mind:

[Ding! Mission Complete: Break the meek-wife persona and claim social control.]

[Reward Granted: Elite Personal Assistant assigned, available in 10 minutes + 100% lifetime discount on all Lumière Group properties.]

I smiled inwardly to myself as two liveried butlers hurried over to escort me toward the private keycard-access elevator.

Three kilometers away, on the fifty-eighth floor of the Windsor Tower, the atmosphere was considerably less welcoming.

Edward Windsor stood staring out the floor-to-ceiling window of his executive office, completely ignoring the glowing stock market performance charts spread across his panoramic screens. The silence in the boardroom was so thick and heavy that even the four vice presidents seated around the table did not dare turn the pages of their reports.

That morning kept replaying in his mind, sharp and persistent as a splinter driven deep under skin, the image refusing to fade, those torn pieces of a five-hundred-thousand-dollar check drifting down onto polished wood, his expensive gold pen sinking beneath the surface of dark coffee, and most of all, that look in her eyes.

Thessa's gaze had held not a single spark of bitterness, not a flicker of desperation. It had been the calm, bored gaze of royalty dismissing an insolent servant.

The office door swung open without so much as a knock. Marcus, his personal secretary and trusted right-hand man for the past decade, stepped inside, his face unusually pale, a leather folder trembling in his hands.

"Mr. Windsor..." Marcus began, his voice quiet and hesitant as he approached the massive mahogany desk.

"Tell me the driver has dropped Lilith safely at the mansion," Edward ordered, his voice rough and sharp as he turned around, brows drawn tight.

"He has, sir. Miss Lilith is settled in. But that is not why I am here. The finance department has just flagged something most unusual regarding Mrs. Thessa."

Edward let out a short, dry laugh that carried absolutely no warmth. He folded his arms across his chest, a twisted sense of relief curling in his chest. Of course. It was only ever a matter of time.

"Has she already tried cashing that ridiculous check she tore up? Or did she march into the bank claiming she is still my wife and demand an advance?" he scoffed, dripping with scorn. "I knew that little performance of dignity would last her about as long as it took her to run out of taxi fare. Tell the bank not to release her a single cent until she learns to apologize properly, on her knees."

Marcus swallowed hard, his gaze dropping to the floor.

"It is nothing like that, sir. Mrs. Thessa has not attempted to access any account linked to you. On the contrary, the international banking consortium has just notified us that Mrs. Thessa Hyde has registered as a premier private guest at the Hotel Lumière and has paid six full months' rent for the Imperial Suite in advance, transferred directly from a private account held in Zurich."

Edward stood perfectly, utterly still. The heavy crystal tumbler he held loosely in his right hand began to creak, the glass straining under the sudden, crushing force of his grip.

"What did you just say?"

"That is not all, sir," Marcus added, his voice dropping almost to a whisper. "Just five minutes ago, an armored vehicle bearing the corporate crest of the Germain Group was spotted pulling into the hotel's private underground entrance. Adam Germain himself has just entered the residential tower."

The crystal shattered in his hand. Amber liquor and sharp, glittering shards sprayed across his carefully organized documents. Bright beads of his own blood dripped down onto the dark mahogany, but Edward did not even blink. His storm-grey eyes blazed with a sudden, unhinged fury, and one single question hammered over and over inside his head:

Where on earth did that woman get ten million dollars, and what in God's name does Adam Germain have to do with my wife?

POV THESSAThe greatest mistake a man makes when he throws you away is believing you will stay rotting in the alley, waiting for him to decide whether to pity your remains. The Grand Hall of the Crystal Palace shimmered beneath three thousand candles and crystal chandeliers that hung like clusters of ice floating in the air. The philharmonic orchestra played a gentle waltz, masking the poisonous murmur of tycoons, diplomats, and investors gathered for the Metropolitan Consortium's Annual Gala. In this circle, a false smile cost ten million, and a single look of disdain could send a construction company's shares crashing before dawn.At the very center of the room, commanding the attention of the press and the bows of his usual admirers, stood Edward Windsor. He looked impeccable in a midnight velvet tuxedo with silk lapels, holding a glass of champagne with his signature cold composure. POV THESSAAn arrogant man will never forgive you for leaving him hanging mid-sentence, but what truly rots his soul is realizing he is no longer listed even as an emergency contact in your phone. The private salon at Maison Valois had settled into exquisite silence after Lilith and her mother were escorted out. While two new sales assistants cleaned away the broken glass and Selene finalized the boutique acquisition documents with our lawyers in Paris, I settled back onto an emerald velvet divan, holding a cup of freshly brewed coffee between my hands. My mobile phone, a sleek titanium device the system had provided me earlier that afternoon, began vibrating on the marble side table. No name appeared on the screen. Just a string of private digits I knew all too well, the direct, confidential line Edward Windsor never shared with anyone outside his boardroom. For three years, the original Thessa had memorized that number, praying every night it would light up her screen with a kind wo

I wore an ivory silk crepe midi dress that skimmed my figure with almost unfair elegance, my chestnut hair falling in soft, polished waves over my shoulders, and ten-centimeter stiletto heels that marked each step across the marble like the beat of a war drum. The pale weariness and meekness that had defined the original Thessa were gone completely, replaced by smooth, porcelain skin and that cool, unreadable composure the system's passive refinement package had gifted me.We stopped before the entrance to Maison Valois, the most e
