Eva's Pov I barely slept after leaving Adrian’s villa in the storm last night. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the contract again. By dawn, I gave up on sleep and came straight to meet mum at the hospital. Now I stood outside the discharge desk, clutching a thin folder of paper, that held me together. “You’re lucky,” A nurse said, sliding the final document toward me with a polite smile. Lucky? I forced a smile. “Yes… very lucky.” My fingers tightened on the paperwork. If luck had anything to do with this, I wouldn’t have signed that contract three years ago. “Room 232 is ready,” the nurse added. “You can bring her home today.” ‘Home.’ The word felt strange on my lips. For the past three years, my life had revolved around Adrian. I heaved a sigh, signed the last form and turned toward the elevator. But her voice suddenly stopped me. “Hold on miss, your mother can’t leave yet.” i stopped mid-step. My heart skipped. “What do you mean?” “It says the patient’s discharge was flagged.” My pulse started hammering. Only one person in this city had the power to interfere with my life so casually. The computer beeped again and the nurse blinked. “…Never mind. The hold was just cleared.” Of course it was. Adrian Moretti never left unfinished business behind. When I entered the room, my mother was sitting upright, carefully folding the blanket on her lap. She always did that when she was nervous. The moment she saw me, her face lit up. “Eva!” I forced a smile. “You should be resting.” “And let the nurses pack everything wrong?” she replied with a small laugh. Her voice was stronger than it had been in months. Seeing that alone made my chest ache. Three years ago, she couldn’t even lift her head from the pillow. I placed the paperwork on the bedside table and started gathering her belongings. “Did you bring the car?” she asked. “Yes.” The lie slipped out before I could stop it. “And Adrian?” she asked softly. My fingers tightened around the cardigan in my hands. Of course she would ask that. “He’s busy today.” A faint frown creased her forehead. “Busy?”She gave me that look mothers have when they already know the truth. “He didn’t want to worry you ma,” I said quietly. “And he is really busy.” If she knew about the contract, it would break her heart. To her, Adrian was simply my generous boyfriend who had stepped in to help when the world turned its back on us. “That boy works too much.” I let out a small breath as she reached out, brushing my hair back. He had never missed a single hospital visit. Not once. Rain or snow, he always stood outside the hospital entrance in that expensive suit, holding the car door open for my mother like she was royalty. “He’s a good man, Eva,” I blinked, fighting the surge of tears. Memories of us together rushed into my chest. “Yes ma." He was a good man, just not mine anymore. “You should thank him again when you see him, and invite him over for a meal. Doctors like these don’t come cheap.” she added. I adjusted the strap of her bag on my shoulder. “I know ma.” She didn't stop talking of Adrian on the drive home. “You’re very quiet today.” She said after studying my face. “I’m just tired.” “You didn’t sleep well?” I wanted to say yes, not after staring at my phone all night, half-expecting it to ring. “I slept fine.” I said. The rest of the drive was quiet. When we reached our apartment, my mother looked around in surprise. “You brought me here?” I nodded. “But Adrian’s place is more comfortable.” My throat tightened. “This is home mum,” I said gently and she seemed satisfied with that answer, and didn't push it. Once she was settled on the couch with a blanket and tea, the apartment was quiet. “You should call Adrian tonight,” she murmured. “To thank him again.” “I will.” and within minutes she fell asleep and the house was painfully silent. My phone screen was dark with no missed calls or messages. A little part in me hoped to see him today because he never forgot a single hospital appointment. After making sure her breathing stayed steady. I quietly slipped into the bathroom and closed the door behind me. The moment the lock clicked, my control shattered and my hand flew to my mouth and the tears came. I leaned against the sink trying to silent, mum couldn't hear me, she shouldn't know. Adrian always said I looked strongest when I smiled. Right now, the girl staring back from the mirror looked like a widow. “Thank you for everything Adrian….” I muttered softly... “thank you for letting me live my dream.” My phone suddenly buzzed on the counter. I wiped my face quickly and picked it up. An unknown number. My stomach tightened as I opened the message. “You should watch your back, bitch.” My fingers froze around the phone and the bathroom felt too small. Just one thought crossed my mind. Valentina had arrived.Chapter 82Adrian's PovI sank into one of the waiting room chairs. For exactly three seconds. Then stood up.Marcus sighed. "You're making everybody nervous." Good. They should be nervous, because right now I felt murderous.A young resident accidentally made eye contact with me before immediately looking away. The waiting was unbearable. Minutes stretched too long and then it became an hour, and then three hours. I sat still waiting.Every time I spent waiting for her felt like punishment. It was preferable getting hit than waiting. I checked my watch and my phone. I also checked the door and repeated the process until I thought I might lose my mind. And then finally… the door opened.A doctor stepped out.Everything inside me stopped. I was moving before I realized it. My hand grabbed the front of his coat hard. The poor bastard nearly stumbled backward."Boss," Marcus warned quietly.I didn't care."How is she?"The doctor froze. His eyes widened slightly from fear. I didn't mind
Chapter 81Adrian's PovThe elevator doors opened and the ICU hallway stretched before me. It was long, the usual white and sterile colour, and I could only wonder when the hospital would start painting its corridors black. The smell of antiseptic burned my nose. There were fluorescent lights here too, they hummed overhead and were too bright and cold. Maybe it was my guilt or fear. I couldn't tell anymore.I kept walking when I paused and retraced my steps backwards. Marcus, who was beside me, looked around with confusion. He walked back with me, his shoes clicked against the tile floor."Boss, what's wrong?" His voice came behind me. I didn't give a response and kept walking. And then we got to the spot. There was a picture on the wall. A very familiar image, but I couldn't remember taking a picture like that at this age here. In a white flowing hospital gown. There was the caption."Get your facial reconstruction here. Safe for kids as low as thirteen." My hands shook with terror a
Chapter 80Adrian's PovI didn't believe him. Of course I didn't believe it. I couldn't even bring myself to believe. How could I? This was another ploy to distract me. They've won and Eva is now in the hospital. Volkov has been the mastermind behind this and I let myself believe him. Not anymore. The man gasped for air like a drowning man. His chest heaved. His face was red and purple and wet. Then he tilted his head. His good eye gleamed in the dim light. His tongue came out, licked the blood from his lips."How does it feel to know you've been fucking your wife's sister?"The words hung in the air like smoke.I didn't move or blink. I just stared at the mentally unwell man before me."How does it feel to know that every time you kissed her, you were kissing the woman who hates you? Every time you touched her, you were touching the woman who wanted you dead?"He laughed again, it was high and crazy. The laugh of someone who had nothing left to lose. I let him laugh. My men were work
Chapter 79Adrian's PovI walked towards the basement, with Marcus following behind me closely and subtly. Not daring to say a word. I was very livid and hadn't felt this way before. A huge frown on my face as I marched towards the basement. The hallway was cold enough that I could see my own breath. But it looked eerily quiet and untouched. I turned to look at Marcus."Are you sure this is the right spot?" He nodded his head."Yes Boss." The hospital was famous for having so many and different basements. We walked further and deeper, the concrete walls in this part dripped with moisture and the fluorescent lights buzzed like dying insects, flickering in and out, casting shadows that danced on the floor.I didn't pay attention to them. This was my life. I've always loved it this way. And then we arrived at a spot with three different underground paths.Marcus nodded and led the way, taking the right path. His hand rested near his weapon. We walked for three more minutes when we finall
Chapter 78Adrian's PovI opened my eyes and I detested the first sound I heard. It was the usual sound of machines beeping steadily in the background.I knew where I was and didn't want to be here, but I couldn't help myself. I couldn't even move my body. The sound dragged me upward through thick darkness and pain shot through me.There was a brutal pounding behind my eyes and it felt like fire was crawling through my veins, my throat burned from thirst. My neck ached like somebody had driven a knife into it.I groaned quietly and forced my eyes open, the dim light blurred above me. I tried to move and immediately felt something sharp pull near my arm. It was a bandage, my breathing roughened, the fragments returned as I remembered what had happened earlier. The maternity ward and everything.“Fuck…” I muttered, eyes still fixed on the ground. How could I let something like that happen? My voice sounded wrecked and really dry. I had let down my guard.I pushed myself upright in the c
Chapter 77Adrian's PovThe hospital entrance slid open with a mechanical hiss as Marcus and I stormed inside. And immediately, I could feel the energy of the place, something was wrong, something felt wrong and the place was eerily quiet, even the lobby was nearly empty now. Only one receptionist remained behind the desk.Even she looked nervous, like she sensed something ugly lingering in the building.Marcus rested a hand near his concealed weapon."Which floor?"I checked the photo again. It was a maternity ward, on the fourth floor. We walked towards the elevator and the ride felt endless and then we heard the sound of a very soft humming."Boss. Do you think it's safe leaving Eva in the vehicle? What if she's the real one and something happens to her, this can be a distraction you know." I was quiet for a while. Very quiet, considering all he had said."She will be fine." I said, even though my heart wasn't sure she would be fine and didn't agree with me.And then the humming ca
