Pain.

It came hot and sharp, like a shockwave to the body.

The little girl screamed as she fell to the ground, her face stinging from the claw attack on her face. Then she turned, true fear licking at her insides as she sighted the scary man fast advancing on her.

Quickly, she scrambled back on shaky hands and feet, her vision blurring with the blood gushing over it. In that moment she wished she had stayed in hiding like her parents warned her to.

At first, she had obeyed, but then her friend got in trouble and she couldn’t watch The Fae Fox kill him.

Not when she liked him so much.

The Fae Fox was a scary man and it wasn’t because he was unusally tall, with long slender arms that ended in sharp talons. Neither was it because of the sharp fangs gleaming in the moonlight.

No. It was because of his one eye.

Red like a blazing ember, there was something truly sinister in the way he looked at her.

There had been rumors that as a were-fox, he liked to eat children and as her back reached a wall, with nowhere else for her to turn, the little girl quaked with sobs at the thought of being eaten.

Suddenly, something blocked her vision or rather…someone.

It was a tall woman, dressed in black leather with a long sword protruding from her talon-like hands.

“How dare you touch my daughter?!” She snarled, earning a chuckle in return from the Fae Fox.

It was a sound that would haunt the little girl for years to come.

Raising the bloody hand which he used to claw the little girl’s face, he brought a talon to his mouth and licked it clean. Then he closed his eyes and hummed in satisfaction.

“Why shouldn't I when she tastes so sweet?” His nasal voice drawled, then he took a whiff of the air before humming satisfactorily. “I can smell her fear.” He said with vigor, his tone carrying a sharp edge. “I bet her flesh is tender with it!”

The girl’s mother was swift, swinging her sword with expertise. At first, a glimmer of hope had settled in the little girl, like a light making her fear scurry into dark corners. Her mother was said to have never lost a fight but the Fae Fox was fast, dodging her deadly arcs with fluid grace.

When the girl heard him laugh, like he was having fun, fear once again settled, snuffing out the hope she once had. Monsters weren’t supposed to laugh when her mother dealt with them. They usually feared her and ran away from her.

With rapt attention, the little girl watched as her mother fought with all her strength and when things got intense, she channeled her wolf, sending it out of her like a spirit. Her wolf, golden in aura, lunged for the Fae Fox, biting and wounding him while he engaged in combat with her.

Now the Fae Fox wasn’t laughing anymore. He looked extremely annoyed and when the girl’s mother sliced his side, creating a huge gash, the little girl got to her feet, hope once again rising.

Of course, she knew her mother would never lose….

Or so she thought.

The Fae Fox fell to his knees clutching his side and just when the wolf lunged for the kill, The Fae Fox brought out a knife from nowhere, lunging it into the spirit-like animal.

Instantly, it vanished into smoke and the girl’s mother screamed in agony.

The little girl had been taught in school that when your spirit animal dies, you feel inexplicable pain, like your spirit had been ripped in half.

In anger, the little girl’s mother raised her sword to finish him off, but he moved with lightning speed, clawing her stomach.

The little girl’s heart pounded painfully as she watched her mother stumble forward with a groan, her sword falling from her hand. She wanted to run to her mother but the latter raised a bloody hand to stop her.

With terror running hot in her veins, the little girl watched the Fae Fox grab her mother’s long auburn hair, and pull her head back.

“Look away, River!” Her mother yelled, her voice on the edge of tears, but the girl was paralyzed, her body stuck in time.

The Fae Fox’s eye narrowed with a smirk, swiftly clawing her throat and that’s when River flinched.

The impossible had happened.

Her mother had lost.

Blood sputtered from her mother’s mouth and throat as she raised a finger and pointed at River. Then she whispered, "Må min sjel beskytte deg" and before River could understand, a blinding light emanated from her finger and shot straight into River’s chest, sending her flying backwards into the wall.

By the time she blinked her eyes open, it was raining, and the Fae Fox was lowered on his haunches, watching her while her mother laid lifeless in the distance.

Too tired to move, she watched him, her fear morphing into hatred. Then someone familiar and far away began to call her name. Someone who sounded like her father.

The Fae Fox smiled and leaned forward. “You’re different now and I hate that I can’t touch you.” He said, his voice barely audible in the rain. “One day, you will find me, to avenge your mother. I can see it in your eyes and I will be waiting for you.” He rose to his feet, his frame blocking out the moonlight. “But you better be tougher than your mother or I swear by the cursed gods, I will surely give you a fate worse than hers.”

And with that, he was gone, leaving behind a girl with a permanent scar and a changed destiny.

RIVER“I am really sorry this is happening.” I heard the Queen say and my stomach twisted in fear. Immediately, Paloma and I rushed to hide behind a giant vase near the staircase. “I will make sure every single person is severely punished for trespassing your lands.” The Queen finished, coming into the living room and standing just a few feet away from where we hid. “I’m afraid that won’t be necessary.” A male voice answered, and instantly my eyes closed in bliss. It was a voice so soothing and seductive like a lover’s whisper, scratching my brain in all the right ways. “They are all dead.”My eyes bulged wide open, not at the deadly message per sey but at the way he said it like he was amused or pleased in some way. Peeping through the small opening behind where we hid, I saw a man so tall, my neck craned up. He had his back to us, and he was dressed in clothes that did nothing to hide his small waist, buff legs and wide back. But that wasn’t what caught my attention. It was the

  • The Scarred Luna & Her Dark Princes   Chapter 5: The Luna Queen Is Coming

RIVERThe image of my mother’s neck being ripped open jolted me awake and I woke up to light blue eyes glaring at me.In a flash I remembered everything. Sitting up in bed, I stared wide-eyed at my surroundings and nothing made a lick of sense. I was in the most luxurious bedroom I had ever seen, richly decorated with themes of black and beige. Was I dead yet? If so, why was my best friend here?I turned to Paloma who stood with her arms folded across her chest, her demeanor cold. This was surely not her bedroom. “What happened? Where am I?” I croaked. Her stern face seemed to cool as her arms fell by her sides. “You’re in my man’s bedroom. He brought you here because you’ve had a rough night.”I blinked in surprise. Densmore brought me here? To his bedroom? His bed? How? Suddenly, a memory flashed in my mind’s eye and I remembered my door bursting off its hinges and Densmore walking in shirtless, looking glorious as ever. His hair had been matted to his skull, his eyes, a ri

  • The Scarred Luna & Her Dark Princes   Chapter 4: Inner Peace

DENSMORESOME MINUTES EARLIEREver since River left, I had known no peace.Instead, my wolf had whined and purred, until I had to excuse myself from the party, Unfortunately for me, Paloma followed and I wondered why she didn't follow after her best friend.“Baby, please talk to me!” Paloma demanded and I sighed just as I reached my bedroom door and turned around. “I want to be alone.” I mindlinked and Paloma looked at me like I had lost my damn mind. “Den, you’ve just been through a traumatic experience. You need someone to be there for you.” She reached out, her hands rubbing my collarbone. For the first time in forever, her touch made me uncomfortable, so I grabbed her hand and peeled them off of me. “I’m fine. I want to be alone. You should check on your friend.” I insisted and didn’t wait for her reply before going in and closing the doors behind me. After hearing her walk away, I heaved a sigh and crossed the room to my balcony while removing my suit jacket and tie. Then

  • The Scarred Luna & Her Dark Princes   Chapter 3: I am Sorry, Daddy

In fact, my parents were part of something called The Aegis - a group of the most highly respected and skilled warrior hunters specially selected to protect the Royal family. The day things went wrong was the day The Fae Fox struck, bringing an army of night creatures to attack the Palace. Back then, the Alpha King of Calmaria was still alive and it was my parents’ duty to protect him. But I made a mistake. Years later and I still wish she chose the King. Just when I thought I had run out of reasons why I did not deserve to exist, tonight topped it all off, giving me the resolve that one of these days, I will end my miserable life. A world without River Scarrow will surely be better, right?A tear rolled down my face as I smiled bitterly. My family liv

  • The Scarred Luna & Her Dark Princes   Chapter 2: Mate

RIVERThe hall became so silent that the shuffle of feet could be heard. Then the Luna Queen suddenly appeared beside her son, regaled in a black chiffon dress that pooled around her feet and accentuated her figure. With a neck clad in diamonds, Ruby Rutherford was a fierce type of beauty - a dark feminine who instilled fear with a look just like her son. “Your Majesty.” I immediately lowered myself in a bow.“What are you doing here?!” I heard her snarl and before I could raise my head, she grabbed my hair so hard, my scalp screamed in pain. People laughed but suddenly, a snarl rippled through the hall, silencing everyone and causing the Luna to still.I raised my head and to my surprise, I found Densmore baring his teeth at his mother. Her brows furrowed in confusion.“What's going on, Denny?” She asked softly and whatever she must heard via mindlink was enough to make her release me from her death grip. I rubbed my scalp, biting down my wince, then Paloma came forward to help me

  • The Scarred Luna & Her Dark Princes   Chapter 1: Happy Birthday

RIVER“Did you hear? The Whitegrove brothers are at it again. They murdered about a dozen people last night for crossing their borders. They are so mean!”I hid behind my best friend as she gossiped with other people. The Whitegrove brothers were from a nearby Kingdom named Shadowvale and I had heard awful things about them, including how they used someone’s head to play soccer. ‘I shouldn’t be here.’ I thought as I nursed a glass of wine I had no business holding. Glancing at the giant, gold clock somewhere to my left, I realized, I had just about two minutes to become of legal age to drink. I fervently focused on that, ignoring the disgusted stares I got from people around. Making a turn, my gaze caught on my reflection in a silverware tray and the feeling of disgust also settled within me. The girl staring back had a terrible scar running from the left side of her forehead down her half open nose, half missing lips to the right side of her jawline. Although she could see fairly
