Today was the day.

I was standing in my room looking at the travel bag on my bed that was not fully closed. I was trying to think about how my life had changed quickly.

Yesterday my life was my own. Now today, my life is being given away like a piece of paper.

My hands were shaking as I folded the last of my clothes. All of my clothes and things can fit into one bag. My clothes and things are all I have to show for my twenty-two years of existing.

I was zipping the bag when I felt a presence.

“Zara.”

I just stopped moving.

I turned around slowly and I was shocked to see my father standing by the door. I did not remember the last time my father said my name.

I just nodded my head.

My dad cleared his throat and would not look at me.

"I know I have not been a good father to you,” he said. "I am sorry."

My heart felt weird. For a second, a silly part of me thought that this could be it. This could be the moment when he would actually stand up for me.
