I rushed down the sidewalk toward school, my backpack slapping against my side with every step. Tears stung my eyes from the fight with Marcus, but I blinked them away.

His words echoed in my head—selfish, burden, helpless. The house felt like a cage, and school was my only escape today. I just wanted a normal day, no drama, no pressure.

Just before I reached the building, I stopped to catch my breath. That's when I saw him. The new transfer student, leaning against the fence. Lucas.

Tall, with dark brown hair falling over his forehead and those piercing gray eyes. He looked strong, like he could handle anything, but something about him felt off, too intense, too watchful.

My heart skipped. Why was he staring at me?

Our eyes locked. Heat crept up my neck. I felt intrigued, pulled toward him, but self-conscious too. I wasn't used to attention. I liked blending in, staying quiet. But he held my gaze, like he saw right through me.

"Emma!" Rachel's voice cut in from behind. I jumped, spinning around. She grinned, her curly hair bouncing as she caught up. "Whoa, spacing out much? You look like you saw a ghost."

I glanced back, but Lucas was gone. Vanished into the crowd. "Nothing. Just... tired."

She nudged me, eyes sparkling. "Liar. I saw you staring at the new guy. Lucas, right? Admit it, you've got a tiny crush. He's hot, tall, and mysterious. Perfect for you."

I rolled my eyes, but my cheeks burned. "Shut up, Rach. I don't have time for crushes. Family stuff is killing me."

She looped her arm through mine as we headed inside. "Come on, spill. Bad morning?"

"Yeah. Marcus again." I bit my lip, nervous about sharing too much. "He thinks I'm not helping enough. Yelled at me in front of my parents."

Rachel squeezed my arm. "That's rough. Your brother's a jerk sometimes. But you're tough, Emma. You'll figure it out."

The hallways buzzed with noise, lockers slamming, kids laughing, chatter everywhere. I tried to shake off the morning, focusing on getting to class. But that stare from Lucas stuck with me.

Why did it feel so... personal?

After first period, Rachel and I walked together toward my locker. It was in a quiet corner, away from the chaos. I liked it that way—peaceful. "So, plans after school?" she asked. "Café shift?"

"Yeah. Need the money." I spun the lock, avoiding her eyes. Unsure about everything lately.

That's when I noticed him again. Lucas, standing near my locker, arms crossed. His expression was unreadable, like he was waiting. For me? My stomach flipped.

My face heated, and I quickly turned away to grab the rest of my books, my heart suddenly pounding in my chest. I tried not to glance back, but my curiosity got the better of me. I stole a quick look.

He was still looking at me.

For a split second, the world seemed to slow down. His eyes, those dark, intense eyes, held mine, and I felt something stir inside me. It was like he was seeing through me, straight into the mess of emotions and confusion swirling inside me.

I quickly looked down at my books, feeling a flush creeping up my neck.

“What’s his deal?” I muttered under my breath, trying to act casual.

Rachel didn’t seem to notice. “I don’t know, but I swear he’s been eyeing you all morning. Don’t tell me you’re not interested.”

I was about to say something when he pushed off the wall and started walking over.

Rachel whispered, "Oh my god, he is coming towards our direction. Act cool.”

Then he stopped right in front of us. "Emma, right?"

I nodded, heart racing. Up close, he was even more attractive lean muscles, commanding presence. But his eyes held something brooding. "Yeah. You're the transfer student. Lucas."

He nodded once. "Can I talk to you for a second? Alone?". Lucas asked, his tone casual but with an undercurrent of something I couldn’t quite place.

Rachel's eyes went wide, shocked. She stared at us.

I hesitated, but curiosity won. "Sure. Rach, wait here?"

She backed up a step, still gawking. "Uh, okay. I'll be right over there."

Lucas glanced at her, then back to me. "I don't think there's a better way of putting this, but you're different from everyone else here."

I blinked, caught off guard. "What? How do you know that? We just met."

He shrugged, but his gaze intensified. "I can tell. The way you carry yourself."

I felt my heart skip a beat. His words didn’t feel like a compliment, but they didn’t sting either. It was more like... an invitation to something I wasn’t sure I understood. Something... unfamiliar.

I tried to laugh it off, brushing it off like it was nothing. “I’m just trying to get through the day like everyone else.”

He raised an eyebrow, his gaze sharp. “Is that all you’re doing?”

Heat rose in my chest—part annoyance, part thrill. Who was he to say that? "You don't know me. Why are you even talking to me?"

A small smirk tugged at his lips. "Maybe I want to."

Tension crackled between us. He was so closed off, like he had walls a mile high. But I felt drawn in. "Well, if you're gonna be cryptic, I'm out."

He stepped closer. "Not cryptic. Just honest. Have you ever felt like there’s something about you that’s different from everyone else?"

The question hit hard, lingering in the air. It unsettled me, stirring doubts I'd buried. Different? Yeah, with my family's mess, I always felt off. But how did he know?

I brushed it off, shaking my head. "Everyone feels that way sometimes. Doesn't mean anything."

His eyes searched mine. "It does for you."

My pulse quickened. What was this guy playing at? "I have to go."

I turned, grabbing Rachel's arm and pulling her along. "Come on."

But Lucas called out, loud enough for the hallway to hear. "We're fated for each other, Emma."

I stopped in my tracks, heart pounding. Fated? What did that even mean? Rachel gasped beside me. Whispers started around us.

Without a second glance, I kept walking, dragging Rachel with me.

“What does he mean by that?” Rachel asked as we hurried away.

“I have no idea.”

I stood at the edge of the park the next night, my heart pounding like a drum in my chest. The full moon hung low in the sky, casting a silver glow over everything. I sat at the kitchen table, my fingers nervously picking at the edges of a half-eaten sandwich. The bread was dry, the meal thrown together in a hurry before school. My mind raced back to last night. Dad's breakdown, the eviction notice looming like a dark cloud. The house already felt stifling. I glanced at the clock. I was supposed to be ready for the day, get my stuff together for school, but how could I focus? How could I go about anything like everything wasn’t falling apart?I needed to leave soon, but my legs felt heavy, stuck in place by the fear twisting in my gut.The front door banged open. Marcus stormed in, his boots thudding against the floor. His eyes locked on me, blazing with anger. "Emma! What the hell? You didn't even clean up after dinner last night.” He snapped, turning on me before I even had a chance to respond. “Do you even care about anything anymore? The house is falling apart, and you’re just sitting here like it doesn’t matter!”I froze. The words felt l

"Emma, honey. We need to talk.” Dad said as the door to the kitchen swung open. He walked in, his face drawn tight with worry. He looked older than his age, lines deep around his eyes. He rubbed his hands together, like he always did when bad news brewed. My stomach dropped.I was sitting on the creaky couch in our small living room, flipping through an old photo album as dust floated in the air, and the pages stuck a bit from years of neglect. My shift at the café ended late last night, and exhaustion pulled at me. But I couldn't stop looking. These photos were my escape, a reminder that life wasn't always this hard. But with Dad’s news, I didn't know anymore.I closed the album quick, setting it aside. "What's wrong, Dad? Is it the bills again?"He sighed and sat beside me. The couch groaned under his weight. Mom followed from the kitchen, her eyes downcast. She didn't say a word, just stood there twisting a dish towel in her hands.Dad cleared his throat. "Things are worse than I
