MEGAN'S POVThe place Xarion takes us to is beautiful. It's a large open complex just outside the city, part garden, part play area, part restaurant, with open-air seating under warm lighting and enough space that it doesn't feel crowded even with families scattered across it. It's the kind of place that manages to feel both special and relaxed at the same time. The twins take about four seconds to fall in love with it.We eat at a table near the garden, and the food is genuinely good, and the conversation is easy in a way that surprises me, the four of us talking and laughing like this is something we've been doing for years instead of something we're figuring out in real time. The twins are ridiculous and wonderful, debating very seriously about which of them is better at climbing, an argument that involves several appeals to both me and Xarion as independent judges, and I find myself laughing more in this meal than I have in weeks. After lunch, Xarion takes them to the playground

MEGAN'S POVI've been dreading this since yesterday morning.Even in the middle of everything good that happened, the twins laughing in the car, Xarion smiling like someone switched a light on inside him, the kiss in the garden that I'm still not fully ready to to actually think about, Vance has been sitting quietly at the back of my mind like an appointment I haven't cancelled yet.And now I'm here. The lounge is exactly what I described when I sent the address. Quiet and warm, with good lighting, a place where conversations can breathe without being overheard. I chose it on, because if there's one thing I owe Vance Stone it's a private space to say what I need to say.I push through the entrance and scan the room. He's already here.Of course he is.He's sitting at a corner table near the window, dressed well in the easy and effortless way he always manages, and the second he sees me his face does the thing it does, that open, genuine warmth spreading across it like he's been lookin

XARION'S POVI don't know exactly how Megan and I get from the entrance to her bedroom. One moment we're standing in the middle of the suite, my lips on hers and her arms around me, and the next we're moving, gradually, almost without deciding to, down the hall, and I'm nudging the bedroom door open with my shoulder and pulling it shut behind us, and the soft tap of the latch is the faintest sound I've ever heard and somehow also the loudest.Megan's watching me.Her back is to the room, and I'm standing between her and the door, and her eyes are on my face with the expression she gets when she's decided something but hasn't said it out loud yet. Not hesitation exactly. More like a woman who knows what she wants and is taking a single moment to acknowledge that before she stops thinking about it.I wait.I've learned how to wait for Megan."Don't give me that look," she murmurs."What look?""The patient one," she replies. "It's unnerving.""Would you prefer impatient?" I ask.The cor

MEGAN'S POVI wake up sore. Not the bad kind of sore. Not the kind of sore that comes from sitting through eight hours of back-to-back meetings or sleeping at an angle that my spine never forgave me for. This is the specific, unmistakable kind of sore that lives in your hips, your thighs, the muscles along your inner legs that don't get much use in everyday life, and the pleasant, dull ache of it spreads through my whole body the second consciousness catches up with me.My wolf stretches lazily inside me, thoroughly unbothered and deeply satisfied.Show-off.I lie still for a moment, staring at the ceiling, cataloguing myself the way I always do when I wake up somewhere that requires me to be functional. My body's pleasantly wrecked. My mind’s surprisingly calm. My emotional state’s complicated in the most manageable way it's been in months. All things considered, that's not bad.I'm warm. The sheets are soft. The room smells like Xarion, which my wolf is extremely pleased about and

MEGAN'S POVI feel his words like a current.I hold his gaze for exactly one second, just long enough to let him know I'm choosing this rather than simply complying, and then I turn over, settling onto my stomach, and I hear him exhale above me.His hands move slowly over my back first, learning the shape of it, and then his thumbs press down either side of my spine with firm strokes that are technically massage and functionally another thing entirely, and I bury my face in the pillow and let myself feel it.He leans down and puts his mouth at the back of my neck, and his hands slide to my hips and grip, and he lifts them slightly, getting me into position, and I understand what he wants and I give it to him without argument. He enters me from behind in one slow, deep stroke, and I feel the stretch of him all the way through me, and the muffled sound I make into the pillow is embarrassing and I fully don't care.He pauses, buried deep, and drops his forehead to the back of my neck."G
