I woke at two in the morning to an empty room. Not entirely empty. Matteo and Aria were in their bassinets, both asleep, both making the small sounds of people who have committed fully to rest. The monitors were doing their steady work. The nightlight above the bassinets was on, casting the room in something low and warm. But Luca was not in the chair. I lay still for a moment and listened to the room and then to the space outside it, the corridor beyond the door, and I heard voices. Low and careful in the way voices go at two in the morning in a hospital, the specific register of people who are trying not to carry through walls. Luca's voice. My mom's. I sat up slowly, careful of the stitches, and I looked at the door that was not fully closed, a gap of perhaps three inches where the voices were coming through along with a thin line of corridor light.
