She came in the morning with food. Not hospital food. Real food, the specific things she knew I loved, packed carefully into containers and carried in a bag she set on the table beside the bed with the purposeful efficiency of a woman who has always expressed love primarily through feeding people. She unpacked it while I watched from the bed and she talked about the hotel down the road and the traffic and the weather and whether I had eaten properly since the surgery, which was her version of a greeting and always had been. I let her talk. I watched her hands while she talked. My mom's hands have always told the truth even when her voice was managing things. I learned this young, the specific language of them, the way they moved when she was happy versus when she was carrying something. She has my grandmother's hands, long-fingered and capable, and right now they were moving with a care that was very slightly too deliberate, the care of someone who is giving their hands something

I spent the morning watching them perform normal. That was the only word for it. Performance. Not dishonest exactly, not cruel, the performance of people who loved me and had decided that love required them to stand in a hospital room and be slightly wrong versions of themselves for as long as it took. Maya a fraction too bright. Bryan a fraction too careful. My mom a fraction too focused on the twins whenever a particular subject came near. And Luca. Luca who was the best in the world at being unreadable and who had given me, two nights ago in a corridor at two in the morning, his voice saying not yet and the specific cadence of a man managing something enormous on someone else's behalf. I watched all of them. I fed Aria and held Matteo and answered the questions Dr Reyes asked during her morning check and ate the food my mom had brought and laughed at the right moments and gave them the version of me that was recovering and present and not sitting with a sentence in her chest

I watched him make the calls from the bed. He did not leave the room to make them. I think that was deliberate. I think he had decided that leaving the room was not something he was going to do again in the near future, that the specific cost of the past several days had produced in him a new calculation about distance and proximity and what happened when he was not in the same space as the people he needed to be in the same space as. He stood near the window with his back half turned and he made the calls one after another with the specific efficiency of someone who has a list in his head and is moving through it without wasting a single word. Marco first. Then two other numbers I did not recognise. Then a pause. Then the number that made my mom look up from the chair she had not left since the Ferrano family had called. Don Adriano. I had never heard Luca call him. It was always the other way. Don Adriano's name appearing on Luca's screen, Luca answering with the specific readi

He told me about the negotiation table first. I already knew the shape of it. I had known since the corridor at two in the morning, since the fragments that had carried through the gap in the door. But knowing the shape of something and hearing the full accounting of it are different things, and I sat on the edge of the hospital bed and I listened to the full accounting and I felt the difference between those two things very clearly. He killed Salvatore Ferrano because he thought Ferrano had taken me. He killed him before confirming it. He killed him while I was in a warehouse two kilometres away, already tied to a chair, and the people who had put me there had nothing to do with Ferrano at all. I stood up. I should not have stood up. The stitches reminded me immediately and sharply that standing up was not something my body had approved, and Luca was on his feet before I had fully straightened, his hands coming to my arms with the careful alarmed grip of someone who had

Marco knocked after my mom had left. This was unusual enough that I noticed it. In the months I had spent in Luca's world Marco had never knocked anywhere. He appeared and departed with the specific seamless efficiency of someone who had decided that doors were a formality rather than a boundary. The knock told me, before the door even opened, that whatever he was carrying required a different register than his usual arrivals. He came in with a folder. Not a phone, not a laptop, not the usual tools of the operational world I had been watching operate around me for months. A physical folder, dark grey, thick with the specific thickness of evidence that has been gathered carefully over time and organised with the intention of being presented. He looked at me first. Then at Luca. "I'm staying," I said, before either of them could have the conversation about whether I should leave. Luca looked at me. Something moved in his expression. Then he looked at Marco. "She stays." Marco s
