Nate’s POVThe warden started to walk, but I followed him. As I said, I needed answers. “I’m doing research. My colleague and I. It’s very important, sir,” I managed to say. It was hard calling another person ‘sir’, considering who I was. But I was willing to do it for the sake of my investigation. “Son…” The warden stopped, turning to me. We were in the hallway. His eyes locked on mine. “Why didn’t you choose something else to do research on? This case is simple; it’s open and closed. Cassie committed a hideous crime three years ago; that’s why she was locked up.” “I know,” I replied, sighing. I adjusted the black T-shirt that I was wearing and continued looking at him. “But I already chose this to be my research topic. And yes, I also know why she was sent to prison. She’s a criminal, and she deserved it. But for research's sake, what happened to her while she was in here for those three years? How did she behave?” The man looked a bit bored, but suspicious. He stared at me for

I stood almost at the door, my heart thumping in my chest after hearing what the blonde girl had just said. This had confirmed to me that the DNA report was really important and that it meant so much more than I was thinking. I had already read it, and I did have my suspicions about Sage not being the real sister of Leon, but I needed to make sure. I needed someone to help me read it so I could be sure of it. And the only one that came to my mind was Nate. He was the only one that I could trust right now. He was the only one who did not hate me or want me dead; the only one who actually believed that I did not do what I had admitted to doing three years ago. Not even Rafael could do that for me, and honestly, that broke my heart. Rafael was someone with whom I had spent years before the whole incident. Yes, I know that he had lost his brother due to what had happened, but he had not even tried to see whether I was being blackmailed or anything. It was like he had abruptly just swit

Leon’s POVThe name was very familiar. I stood there, trying to remember where I had heard it. And then it dawned on me. It was the warrior from earlier. It was the same guy who had gone to the councilman concerning Cassie’s case, with the excuse of it being for research purposes. “Sh*t,” I cursed under my breath, forgetting that I was still on the phone with the guy. “Are you…is everything alright, Alpha Leon?” The Warden asked. I nodded as if he could see me, then I replied, “Yes, it’s all fine. Everything is fine.” I sighed. “Thank you for telling me, Warden. I hope you have a nice evening.” With that, I clicked the small button on my wired headphones, ending the call. “What the f*ck?” I said to myself. This was getting serious. This had to be Cassie’s doing. Sage and I had confronted her the first time, and she had sworn that she had not told anyone. And funny enough, I kind of believed her. I have known her for years, so I knew her tells when she was lying. And I don’t think

I stared at the ocean, the waves crashing so calmly and aggressively at the same time. My heart was filled with warmth just by being close to Nate, just by sitting here in silence with him. It was healing me. But like everything that had been taken away in my life…everything good…I knew that he was going to be taken away. It was just a matter of time. He was going to see the true me, how boring I was. He was going to see that I was not worth risking his life for. And he was going to regret all of this. Because you know what? Things always turned to sh*t. The only good times that I had were behind me. There were no better days. Right now, fate was just teasing me; playing in my face. Me? Cassie? Me get to meet a hot guy, and we fall in love with each other and live happily ever after? That could never be my life. I was cursed. Sage had already taken everything good from my life, and I might never get the Leon that I knew; the brother that I loved, the one who loved me. Maybe it was

Sage’s POVI sat down, putting my expensive bag next to me on the couch that was in the doctor’s office. I already had a strand of Leon’s hair in a small zip lock bag that I had pulled out. I was just waiting for the man to finish setting up what he needed to set up so he could collect the samples. When he was ready, he turned and made his way towards me. But he stopped. “Madam Sage…I have been, uh…” He swallowed, nervousness written all over his face. “We have been doing this for more than two years now. I have spoken up about this before, but you didn’t hear me out. I really think we should stop. It does not work that way. Your DNA is not going to magically change. It’s going to be the same every single time,” He explained, looking at me and waiting for a response. My heart skipped a beat at his words. It hurt me a bit to hear the truth, but that was not why I was here. “What the f*ck did you just say to me?” I fired at him, and he visibly flinched. I stood on my feet, the strand o
