Many of MotoNovel’s original works were first posted for free by their authors on Webnovel platforms such as Royal Road or Scribble Hub. These early versions of MotoNovel-licensed works are written in a more raw style and provide insight into the development of the story as it was written by the author. Reading the free works on these platforms is also a great way to find out about new authors who could be licensed by MotoNovel in the future. The comments section for free works also provides community interaction that is not available through the MotoNovel app.

This well-written horror novella was a solid B for me. While it certainly did not break new ground within the genre, it was well-structured and highly engrossing. I particularly enjoyed the author’s use of two timelines: the present day and the years spent locked in a filthy basement by the main antagonist. As expected, the basement scenes were at times claustrophobic, but the author managed to move the plot along regardless. The main antagonist was also effectively creepy without crossing over into ‘villain’ space. My biggest wish would have been for more development of the supporting characters outside of our central family unit. As it was, however, they served their purpose for the brief space of time in which they appeared. As a short, weekend read that will take you exactly where you want to go while proving thoroughly engrossing along the way, it delivers.

Just lurking here. Looks like a lot of work to borrow e-books. The free e-books from my local library through their ebook app are fine by me!

Honestly? Just read something else. There are so many amazing, legally free stories on the internet. Webnovel sites such as Royal Road, Scribblehub, and Wattpad have thousands of high-quality, complete novels available for free. If you’re specifically looking for translated East Asian webnovels, many official translators have made the free chapters to their novels available on their own websites, or have been aggregated by NovelUpdates, which links to legal sources of novels. Using a mod for MotoNovel to read free translated East Asian novels online would be like insisting on using a mod to break into a specific vending machine when there’s a free buffet being served next door. Read something new and discover your favorite new author in the vast amount of free content online, all without having to download some shady APK.

Waiting for the next update of a series is frustrating but temporary. Reading an abysmal Machine Translation (MTL) version of a series is permanent. Unfortunately, every time I give in to MTL, I regret it. Later, when I get to re-read the good parts in proper translation, I keep thinking to myself, “Why did I read that?” At first, it might satisfy your curiosity but it takes away so much from reading the good parts in proper translation. The wait for new chapters is temporary, whereas the disappointment of a butchered story can last for a long time. It’s better to be impatient and excited than impatient and disappointed. My policy these days is to either wait however long it takes or drop the series if I find the wait too unbearable.

Just looking for some recommendations here at Goodreads to add some more places to read.

The Kindle version had terrible formatting on my old Paperwhite. The web images were missing, and the custom text formatting I had done for time-skips was rendered as messy code. I had to request a refund, and even though it may have been fixed by now, it left a very bad taste in my mouth. In the meantime, reading it on Royal Road, in the browser, worked like a charm. Some stories are just web-native and work better that way, I suppose.

Just reading the recommendations. This term “projection novel” is new to me, but I do like BL+sci-fi/fantasy. Following this thread for ideas.

Most BL authors, as well as web novel platforms, have email newsletters where they announce Freebie days, sales with special discount codes, etc. They even give away short stories as a special treat to their subscribers. I have a special folder for these newsletters on my email account, and I try to read them once a week. In them, I’ve received complete free novellas, short stories that haven’t been published yet, and even free chapters that are published before the rest of the book.
It may require you to sign up for the newsletter (which some people are really opposed to), but seriously, it’s such a low barrier to entry to get this kind of stuff sent to you on a regular basis. Authors love it because it helps them build their direct audience, and you love it because you get to read free legal fiction on the web without having to seek it out. Just use a burn email or a throwaway to sign up with, is my advice.

Yeah, same to you! I’ve been searching for about 3 months now with sporadic searching every now and then, and then I have a big search day where I click through a ton of sketchy sites with tons of pop-ups, and I never find what I’m looking for. Hopefully some publisher will pick up your book. That would be great. The searching is exhausting.
