The real mistake came after: reaching for my phone before a drop of water, before I’d even stumbled to the kitchen. Forty-one missed calls. The number glared back at me, impossible to process. I scrolled through them with fingers that felt numb, as if they belonged to someone else. Nadia had called twelve times, then vanished. She left no voicemails, too, which somehow felt worse. It was just a silent stack of missed chances, each one hinting at a crisis I couldn’t yet name.
