The voice came from everywhere and nowhere—layered, echoing, young and ancient at once. Male? Female? It shifted with every syllable. My heart hammered. “Who said that?” Light flared. A figure materialized ten feet in front of me, made entirely of shimmering blue dust, its shape flickering like static. Human silhouette. No face.

Thorne growled, stepping forward. The soldier swallowed hard. “We didn’t see it coming. It’s… it’s not like the others. It’s silent. Watching.” We all turned and saw it.
