I let out a sigh, pressing my back even more against the chair. Adeline was turning thirty-seven this year without a man yet. She had been whining lately about how much she needed a new car so that was exactly what I would get her since if anyone else wanted to do that, it would be her partner and she had none, so my gift should and would stand out, hopefully.

Adrian asked, his cold tone gone. “Well, someone who is two hundred and thirty is regarded as an old man,” Adelia replied casually, and she started eating. “But I’m not old,” Adrian cried out. “It was like an insult calling him old. For someone to even be regarded as old in their world, they had to be at least eight hundred years old, just like Alphaeus.” “Alright, Old man,” Adelia replied, and a smirk appeared on her face when she saw the unhappy look on Adrian’s face. “You know what, I think I will start calling you old man.”

I giggled playfully and leaned up to look at his profile. Side-eyeing me, he was frowning, and his eyes were completely red. “Your mistaken child,” he growled and moved so quickly I gasped at him when my butt hit the ground. “Don't trifle with me Adeline, you're a fledgling. A few days ago you were wearing a diaper and pissing on the floor. I'm over five hundred years old and you know nothing about life…,” he muttered in bitter anguish. Blinking my eyes up at him I rested my forearms on my bent knees and exhaled deeply.

Present day 2 years later, in 2017 Adeline’s POV: I awoke suddenly with a distasteful sensation. The domino effect of first seeing where I am; home? Check. What’s that awful smell; alcohol breath? Check. That toe curing sensation; migraine. Lavishing, amazing, lovely! I would say I would never go within a 5-meter diameter with alcohol but who am I kidding, I’ve said that since freshman year in university.

He points towards a drunk man stumbling outside the tavern, “Because that’s him. Drunk as a skunk.” I look in the direction that he’s pointing in and see an older man with dark, brown hair and a stern appearance. His appearance would be more intimidating were he not stumbling around like a drunkard. He seems to be in his early forties, and I feel unconvinced. The dates on the book spanned at least seventy years. “Are you sure?” I look towards the passerby who’d just stopped me, but he’s already gone. I turn my attention back to the stumbling figure and hesitate. Is that really the author?

"True. I’m very forgetful. Once, I woke up and got fully dressed in my school uniform, ready to leave. My father had to tell me it was 4 PM, not 7 AM." Axel’s lips quirked into a ghost of a smile—gone in a flash, but Adeline caught it. "Did you just smile, Axel?" "It was just your imagination." "No, I saw it! You smiled... and your smile is actually quite handsome." Thump! Adeline went silent and returned to her porridge when Axel shot her a look of genuine annoyance for teasing him.

Ashford intercepts us near the Monet, diamonds, attitude, the particular cruelty of women who have never needed to be anything else. "Well. This is unexpected, Albert." Her eyes sweep Adeline, inventorying flaws to discuss later over brunch. "And who is this lovely creature?" "Adeline Carter." I offer nothing further. Mrs. Ashford extends a hand weighted with rings. "How refreshing. And where is your family from, dear?" Trap deployed. Adeline tilts her head. "Queens. My mother's a librarian." The faintest suggestion of a smile. "She always said I was too curious for my own good."

"We just need to get out of the open. We’ll find a place to hide together. A hollow log, a cave... anything." "Hide?" A sharp voice cut through the dark from just behind us. Even though I couldn’t see her face clearly, I knew it was Mirabel. I would recognize that sneering tone anywhere. "That’s your big plan, Adeline?" She chuckled and stepped closer. "You three really think hiding like scared rabbits is going to save you? If you had a single wolf between the three of you, maybe you’d have a real chance at surviving the night. But no, you’ll probably just trip over each other in the first five minutes and serve yourselves up on a silver platter."

Chapter 1- Alsie Introduction- If you want to get better acquainted with the characters in this story I suggest you read Detective Alsie and the Triplet Alphas...the beginning I sat on the floor playing with my sons, surrounded by my mates, enjoying this small moment of peace. Knowing full well that everything in our lives, was about to change….again. Not that, that was anything new to us. If there is something we all knew about, it was adapting and pivoting quickly. The lie tasted bitter because the truth was I hadn’t stopped immediately. I had searched for months or maybe a year. But Adeline has disappeared. No address, no workplace and no phone number. Life moved on or at least I convinced myself it had. “You’re thinking again,” Mira said. “I have work.” I replied “You always have work.” “And you always talk too much.” I said and she laughed. “Fine. Call me later.” I grabbed my car keys and headed for Hartley Corporation. The drive took twenty minutes, but my mind was elsewhere.
