Lyra — Age 8 Blackwood Pack Territory, Alaska By her eighth birthday, Lyra Blackwood knew that Alaska wore beauty and brutality like twin crowns. Jagged mountains loomed beyond the windowsill, their snow-packed peaks gleaming like sharpened ivory fangs. Endless forests of spruce and fir stretched into shadowed depths, their needles whispering secrets the wind alone could carry. Winter draped the land in ice too long, while spring arrived hesitantly, as though afraid to break the frost’s hold. Even daylight felt reluctant—pale and fleeting, as if it belonged somewhere warmer, more forgiving.

I look around and see faces I don’t recognize—it’s unnerving. But they’re having a great time panting around with the other kids, and I don’t want to spoil their fun on account of my paranoia. Now read!” She sighed, finally looking at all the books piled up in front of her. “Right.”

Rose’s Point of View After hours of flying, we finally arrived in Alaska—hundreds of kilometers away from the Blue Lagoon Pack. Everything about this place felt different, almost like stepping into another world. The crisp air hit me as soon as we left the airport, the cold wind biting against my skin. Unlike the sweltering heat back at the Blue Lagoon Pack, Alaska had a permanent chill. Even at its warmest, the temperature here never rose above sixteen degrees Celsius. I had always struggled with the heat, so I imagined I would fall in love with this place.

Well, there are so many reasons that I don’t even know from which one to begin. First and foremost , I lived in this god forsaken deadbeat of a town. God, how I hate this town. How I curse my damn luck for having the unfortunate fate of being born and raised here. Where is here you ask? I will tell you. I live in an extremely small town called ‘Snow’. It is a town with a population of around 500 people, located in Alaska; more specifically, located within a collection of mountains that spread all the way across the border between America and Canada.

Skimming over the words, I decide I should take the book back with me to read it more in-depth. Shoving the book into my backpack, I pull the straps tight onto my shoulders before carefully stepping out of the rubble at my feet until I am outside. Going downhill takes much less time than going uphill, and I make it to the broken truck in no time.
