The Perfect Wife Walked Away

“Director Hoffman, Alice has just completed her graduation presentation, and she still needs some time to deal with personal matters.” Adam was suddenly beside me, holding two glasses of champagne. He handed one to me.
I didn’t realize he had joined us.
“Besides, her husband’s recovery is still at a critical stage,” Adam added.
His interjection was smooth, neither directly rejecting the offer, nor pointing out my current obligations too obviously.
Hoffman nodded knowingly, his assessing gaze moving between Adam and I. He allowed a knowing smile. “Of course, of course. But Alice, here’s my card. Whenever you are ready to join us, you are always welcome in Zurich.”
