I accepted it and spent every penny on Ryan.
When Ryan turned five, the usual monthly payment was replaced by an enormous, oddly specific sum. Along with it came an envelope.
Inside was a note in Jeremy's handwriting:
"Gina, I'm dying. Last night, I had a dream. In it, I didn't believe Carolina's lies. I trusted you. I sent her away and stayed by your side every moment. When you gave birth to our son, I named him Ryan Sterling.
"In that dream, the three of us were happy—just like I promised you five years ago. But when I woke up, I was still alone, paying for sins I'll never outrun.
