"My old eyes are not what they were, but I will look." I knelt down, my knees popping, partly for show, partly because I’d been in this crouch for six hours. I leaned in toward the bottom of the massive, floor-to-ceiling oak bookshelf. It was a beast of a thing, carved from solid timber and weighed at least four hundred pounds with the books included. "Is it back there?" Julian asked. I heard a strange click from above. "I do not see any ledger, Señor. Only dust and…"

I ran my hand along the woodwork beautifully crafted to match the rest of the apartment. "How?" The shelves were partially filled with the books that arrived from Palo Alto, as well as all the ones I'd already picked up from Columbia, with plenty of room for more. To the left, I noticed a new shelf, small, polished, and unlike the grand spiral ones towering around us. My gaze caught on a delicate gold tag at the top: ‘The Juliens.’ My lips curved without meaning to. He set the books down carefully, arranging them as though they were fragile pieces of our story.

I was about to give up and try again another day, when I saw a book that seemed misplaced because it was placed upside down, and one of the words on the title was misspelled.

The air was heavy with the scent of aged papers, and leather-bound books that had imprinted words of inks that could barely be erased on them. Sunlight streamed through the tall, arched windows up the wall, casting a warm glow on the rows upon rows of bookshelves that lined the walls. The shelves, which were works of art, crafted from rich mahogany with their surfaces polished to a gleaming shine, were reaching towards the high ceiling that seemed endless in a beautiful arrangement.

The walls are painted a deep shade of navy blue, and the floors are made of polished hardwood. In the center of the room is a king-sized bed with crisp white sheets and fluffy pillows. It's my sanctuary, the place where I retreat to when the world becomes too overwhelming. Beside the bed is a matching set of nightstands, each with a lamp and a stack of books. Against one wall is a massive bookshelf, filled to the brim with leather-bound tomes and old manuscripts. I've always been an avid reader, and my collection spans a wide variety of genres and subjects. Some of my favorite authors include Shakespeare, Hemingway, and Kafka.
