Rotating Bookshelf Tower Novels & Stories

‘I’d like that very much. We start with the library, where there are books, some are many centuries old, in glass stands. I’ve never seen a book or so many books before. The ceiling is twenty-foot high, and the second level, which is also lined with bookshelves, is secured by a polished, mahogany balustrade that edges around the whole rectangle room. Both levels have six sculpted mahogany columns, spaced apart evenly, with perfect architectural precision. Against the bookshelves are several wooden ladders on wheels, and it seems these, too, have been spaced apart at exact intervals.

Then he vanishes us away. When my feet hit the ground I look around in wonder at the incredible room around us, slowly turning to take it all in. We’re in an immense tower of some kind, the wall stretching so high that I can barely make out the glass ceiling. An incredible telescope takes up most of the view of the upper levels anyway, and every single inch of the rounded walls of the tower are covered in bookshelves filled with thousands and thousands of books, all reachable by spindly little ladders and rickety wooden staircases that climb up and up and up.

This was the most content I've been in my entire life. "Twin gifts" I whispered to the books as I walked threw to the back and found more tables and behind them were more vertical rows of book cases under the balcony. After the first set of shelves it was pitch black and I wondered what was hiding back there. I walked over to them and seen all the books were dark green and made out of a soft scale material I ran my fingers over them and felt each bump. Just as my curiosity was bout to walk me into the darkness a large red book came dancing into my vision startling me, I took a few steps back letting it pass me. I watched as it was floating slowly slightly bouncing in the air.

I frown up at him, confused, wanting to be in on the secret. “That one,” he says, bringing me close to the bookshelf and nodding towards it, not looking at me. “The green one. With the gilt title.” Hesitant, I reach out a hand and touch the book he indicated, pulling it towards me. The book tilts in my hand, but instead of sliding off the shelf it pivots forward and clicks. Then, I gasp as the whole bookshelf swiftly spins away, revealing…a corridor. “Oh my god,” I whisper, looking up at Kent, shocked. “You – you have secret passages?”

I stood in awe, admiring it as I ran my fingers along the smooth edges of the design. After taking in the beauty, I realized the door was cracked open, so I walked in. The layout of this home was intricate and breathtakingly gorgeous. The interior revealed a grand, high-ceilinged space filled with silver-spined books that seemed to stretch up to the heavens. Towering shelves, crafted from a rich, dark wood, supported the tomes, their silver lettering glinting in the soft, ambient light.

There was a leather couch in the corner, a bar cart with expensive-looking bottles of whiskey, and a window that overlooked the estate grounds. It was the kind of room that screamed power and control. The kind of room that belonged to a man like Jonathan Hart. I walked over to the bookshelves, running my fingers along the spines. Most of them were business books, biographies of CEOs and politicians, a few on philosophy. Then I noticed something odd. One of the shelves looked… different. Like it didn’t quite sit flush with the wall. I reached out and pressed against it gently. There was a soft click, and the shelf swung inward.

The delicate interplay of light and shadow danced upon the polished marble floors, creating a mesmerizing tapestry that seemed to guide us forward. Rows upon rows of perfectly stacked shelves stretched out as far as the eye could see, their contents a treasure trove of knowledge and imagination. Each book stood proudly, a gateway to countless realms and untold stories. The aroma of aged paper mingled with the faint scent of polished wood, an intoxicating blend that evoked a sense of reverence and awe.

An​d behind it‍, f‍loo​r-to-ceiling s​helves. My eyes​ s​canned​, frantic. Le⁠a‍th​er-bound books​. A small bronze statue​. Framed ac‍colades. And⁠ then, on​ t​he middl‍e shelf, slight‌ly apart from t⁠he rest as if in i‍ts‌ own sacred space: a simple, thi‌n black frame.

"My old eyes are not what they were, but I will look." I knelt down, my knees popping, partly for show, partly because I’d been in this crouch for six hours. I leaned in toward the bottom of the massive, floor-to-ceiling oak bookshelf. It was a beast of a thing, carved from solid timber and weighed at least four hundred pounds with the books included. "Is it back there?" Julian asked. I heard a strange click from above. "I do not see any ledger, Señor. Only dust and…"

Nothing had acted randomly. Every lock had a purpose. Every symbol had a meaning. Which meant this chamber had one as well. He slowly raised his head and studied the towering shelves surrounding them. For the first time, he noticed something strange. Not every bookshelf was the same height. Three reached all the way to the ceiling. The remaining shelves stopped several feet lower. At first glance it looked like ordinary architecture. But the taller shelves formed a perfect triangle around the chamber. His heartbeat accelerated. "Elias." The old Archivist turned.
