I think about how easily they could spy on others in their animal form. Then I wonder if Shelley could come up with something that would detect them, and make a note to ask her. Not right now. I hope she’s asleep right now.

Two such evolutions began to override the others, and this was the beginning of our demise, though we knew it not at the time. While always in touch with our bestial natures, some chose to embrace it. Shapeshifters, who had previously had the talent to shift into all animal forms, began to shift into individual animals. They chose specific creatures exclusively: the canines, the felines, and other creatures. This faction embraced the environment and nature, taking on the characteristics of their host animals in themselves and living with their dual nature. These beings stayed close to their brethren though and were respected in kind.

“Breathe, Akiro, breathe.” Akiro flushed in embarrassment as he realised he had just rambled towards Terrence, but the guy was just looking at him in amusement. “Sorry, I just got really, really curious,” he said. “Again, it’s alright,” the shapeshifter said, brushing off his apology. “And to simply answer your questions: we can only change if it’s a living being we’re shifting to. No need to touch or chant something. Just as long as we know what they looked like. Though we can miss a few details because it wasn’t like we could look at someone else’s whole features. Just the surface.”

The sound startled him; he couldn’t remember laughing aloud. "Very funny, Zendedari. I’m so glad you find this amusing. Those people actually formed themselves out of fog, like something in a movie." She gave a punch to his arm for emphasis. "Explain it." "Shape-shifting is easy once you are strong. When I said we run with the wolf, I meant it literally. We run with the pack. We can fly with the owl and become the air." He pushed back the wet hair framing her face. "Why is it you are not cold?"

I informed. “Two of them?” they asked. “They’re both our enemy. Shapeshifters are not natural creatures. They both became shapeshifters from a spell gone wrong. The shapeshifter I encountered was a woman, and I found out from Simoa that her mate is the true villain. He’s the person who turned them both into those creatures – himself by mistake, and with her, he was under the impression he’d figured out where he went wrong with his spell, but that’s not how things turned out. We need to find out the woman’s identity before she became a shapeshifter so that we can figure out why she’s targeting my parents,” I explained.

I wonder if this one has a story to tell. After a few days, the shapeshifter has recovered. It sits up, and I bring it some food and water. It eats and drinks, and then it looks at me, its eyes full of gratitude. It speaks, its voice deep and raspy. "Thank you for saving my life," it says. I nod, and I ask it if it would like to tell me its story. The shapeshifter hesitates, but then it begins to speak. "My name is Lycan, and I am an outcast among my kind. "Lycan tells me about the world of shapeshifters, a world of beauty and danger. They are creatures of the night, able to shift between human and animal form. They live in the shadows, feared and misunderstood by humans. Lycan tells me of t

I really don't know where he's going with this. "Are you talking about shapeshifters? I read somewhere about Native Americans being able to shape-shift." He smiles slightly. "Yes, that's sort of what I'm talking about. There are people who can shift from human to animal. I'm one of those people. I can change from human to animal." Interesting. I must still be unconscious because I swear he just told me he can change from a human to an animal. If I'm dreaming, I guess I'll go along with it.

My heart pounds in my chest as I strain to listen, my eyes scanning the shadows for movement. And then, from between the trees, a figure steps out—its shape shifting and twisting as if it can’t decide what it wants to be. One moment, it’s a wolf, then a bird, then something entirely else. Its eyes, glowing with an eerie light, lock onto mine. A shapeshifter.

Scratching his beard Jackson Turns and takes a deep breath then looks back at us shaking his head then looks at Markus.

“I don’t even know what that is.” “Are you familiar with folklore, myths about the things that go bump in the night. Like vampires, witches, and yes, shape shifters.” “I watched movies growing up, did a little reading, sure…” “See, you’re not completely in the dark.” He smiled as if he were making progress. I was sure to not show any facial expressions. “I thought shapeshifters turned into like animals or something.” He gave a nod. “They do. Normally.” I didn’t like the way that he was looking at me when he said that. “Normally?” What does that mean? I needed him to elaborate.
