Jake began to feel a strange compulsion and could not look away from the window. The kid's mask continued to droop as Jake felt a dizziness when suddenly, a sharp sound came from the window, pulling Jake out of that weird trance. Jake gasped when he saw a black figure on the window. It was a raven, its beak lodged into the glass and flattering its black wings madly. It was trapped. Jake fell back on the bed and was reaching out for the book when the raven began to caw until it started to sound like a human being screaming. With one last scream, Jake watched the bird explode into a mound of blood, spattering the entire window red.

One Raven against three puppets. The small challenged the great. A contrast that seemed utterly lopsided erupted in an instant with suffocating combat power! That jet-black Divine Raven reborn from the Heaven's light was no longer comparable to any ordinary bird. Fine, starlike Heaven's Patterns coiled around its body, every inky feather as hard as Ancient Iron. The edges of its wings cut through the air, leaving spatial scars that refused to heal. Facing three three-meter-tall Ultimate Zombie Puppets clad in black iron armor and nurtured by Soul-devouring Energy, the Raven neither dodged nor retreated. With its wings spread wide, it directly collided head-on with their encirclement.

Her thin chest tightened; her bones ached with it. She held her breath, recognizing the bird for what it was: a grisly black-winged scavenger that blinded and killed its own nestlings in a crazed frenzy, nothing else—and she no longer feared it. Her eyes narrowed, irises going a smoky violet. Warm radiance had filled her, whether from the soft vibrating or not she couldn’t tell.

I feel like I’m dragging a dead weight after sitting for so many hours, and my apprehension isn’t exactly making me limber on my feet. Meadow locks the truck with the keys Carmen hands off and we turn and stare at the trees where the birds seem to be patiently waiting on us. She raised a hand and used one of her fingers to touch it and then, she used the other three fingers. It was rough to the touch, and hard, firm. She trailed her fingers down to the edge and she quickly withdrew her hand back when she got a cut. She did not expect it to be sharp. “Ow!” she quickly brought her finger up but stopped when it almost touched her lips. She stared at the black blood and it gave her an unsettling feeling. Why is it black?

White hot pain rips and tears through me as every bone in my body cracks, breaks and extends before jutting itself into place. Screams and howls of pain fill the air, dulled only by the trees and my own pain consuming me. Canines lengthening and claws stretching out, and yet, still I can feel my body is covered in something warm and wet. I sniff the air. Blood. So much blood. Sweet, warm, red liquid copper. Soon the pain dulls to warm rather than hot, and screams become howls and growls in the distance. I join in, yanking and pulling at the chain until my neck hurts so much I think my head might fall right off my shoulders. And then, everything goes black.

A flock of blackbirds flew out from the thicks of green, and hastily headed out of the forest—they were a good reminder, that this world was indeed inhabited.

Derrick Blackbird.” A cool breeze makes me shudder. Every supernatural knows about the Blackbirds. Old money and even older power. Everyone knows about them. Especially to stay away from them. “I don't even know him.” I say in annoyance. “It doesn't matter anyways. It's purely political.”
