I crouched and picked it up carefully, ignoring the bite of glass under my shoes. Something was tied to it. A note. Four words. Written slowly. Deliberately. Cruelly. You’ll never make it. The room seemed to go cold. I looked up just as Celeste came to my side, her eyes scanning my face before dropping to the note. Her breath left her in a sharp, silent exhale.
