The first light of day felt wrong. Not because the blackout had damaged the city, it hadn’t, not seriously. Because when she woke, there was a note waiting on her desk. Not an email. Not a system alert. A physical note. Handwritten. She froze. The Note “I watched the restart. You handled fear well. But you didn’t make the choice alone. Next time, you will.” No signature. No traceable ink. She crumpled it slightly in her fist.

He set the bottle down carefully. As though it might break. As though something inside him already had. His gaze landed on a small wooden drawer. He pulled it open. Inside were dozens of neatly folded notes. Shopping lists. Reminders. Little things. Ordinary things. The kind of things nobody notices until they disappear. One note made him stop. It was written in Alina's handwriting. Simple. Quick. Messy compared to her usual neat writing. Remember to remind Lucien about his meeting on Thursday. Don't let him skip breakfast.

It landed silently at the edge of the table. A pressed forget-me-not flower. Dry. Fragile. Perfectly preserved. Beneath it lay a tiny handwritten note almost hidden by the stem. Only five words. She always remembered what mattered.

Someone who knew the space well enough to put things back close to where they found them. But not exactly where. The pen holder is on the wrong side of the desk. The second drawer is not fully closed. The stack of client folders on the shelf is in a different order. Small things. The kind of things you only notice if you know exactly how you left a room. She notices all of it. And then she sees the note. It is on her keyboard. A plain index card. Three words in clean block print. LEAVE BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. She stares at it for a long moment.

But her jaw was tight. And her eyes weren't moving the way they normally did when she was actually reading something. She wasn't okay. She was just very good at looking like she was. I already knew that. I still hated it. My phone buzzed on the table. I glanced at it. Unknown number. I frowned and picked it up. Unknown: You left your notes at the house yesterday. The ones from the project meeting. I stared at the message. Then stared some more. Because I absolutely did not remember leaving any notes.
