She disappears into the night and I lean against the window, heart thundering in my chest as I anxiously wait for her signal. My eyes scans the darkness outside, searching for any sign of Astrid. Each passing second feels like an eternity as I strain to catch a glimpse of her. A click behind me has my head snapping back. My heart lurches into my throat when the doorknob twists. Once. Twice. Someone's trying to get in. Alaric? With half a thought, I leap out the window, landing roughly on my feet. The jolt of impact vibrates through me, my teeth clacking together. Ignoring the discomfort, I sprint away, not stopping until I found myself surrounded by a forest.

I shift forward, eyes narrowing. Through the window, I can see the faint outline of a crib. Ariana’s shadow moves back and forth, slow, rhythmic, soothing. She’s singing. I can’t hear the words, but I know the melody. I press my hand against the cold windowpane of the car, fingers trembling. Something inside me twists tighter, darker. The glass fogs under my breath. I draw a line through it, just one, like I’m cutting the night in half. “Enjoy it while it lasts,” I murmur.

ZARA I’m still asleep but it feels like I’m in a trance. I hear the chirping of birds from outside the window, which is strange because even though this place is surrounded by trees, I have never heard a bird sing outside my window. Soft winds pass by in a whisper, lifting the blinds around and causing them to brush my skin. There’s a halo of sunshine around my face, making it impossible to keep my eyes shut for longer.

Due to Aria’s disappearance, I didn’t even have the power of superhealing. To take my mind off the pain, I focused on the freedom that was now just moments away. I thought about how it would feel to inhale fresh air and not the stagnant one of the dungeons that stunk of rotten flesh and gore. I kept my eyes on the window and kept climbing. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I pulled myself for one last time and reached the top of the wall. I exhaled heavily at the sight of silver collected in the thick clusters on the window. It was gonna burn like hell.

But it wasn’t just dreams anymore. I could feel it. Even now… standing here… like eyes burning into the back of my neck. I spun toward the window, heart hammering— Nothing. Just the trees. But something in my gut whispered otherwise. --- Downstairs, the house buzzed with energy. I heard voices before I even reached the last step. Louis, Asher, and Aria were all crowded by the window, fighting over who got the best view. “What’s going on?” I asked, frowning.

But I could force the window open. One breath of air at a time.

I love the way they smell; Berries peaches and all. “This is the most gorgeous view I have ever seen I think out loud . Rookie fucking mistake, I should have examined the window with more caution. Aside from finding another trap, I did learn the windows are made out of something similar to a two-way mirror or tinted windows. I can just make out my reflection in the glass, but I can’t see through it, yet I can see the light of this supposed lightning flashing inside. Iolaire walks up to me, “Find anything?” She quietly asks. “Razor blades,” I deadpan.

Aria’s POV The sun filtered gently through the sheer curtains, casting golden stripes across the kitchen floor. Outside, the wind rustled the trees in soft waves, the kind of quiet that used to feel like a luxury—but now, it felt like a miracle. I stood barefoot by the open window, sipping tea, watching Victor and Jasmine chasing each other on the lawn. Her laughter rang through the air, bright and full of joy, like it had never been touched by fear. Victor scooped her up mid-run and twirled her, both of them falling into the grass in a tumble of giggles.

Spray mosquito killer through my broken windows to suffocate and poison me? I knew he was outside my room now, standing in front of the window, staring at it in defeat.
