Joseph's men held Elliot down while Joseph picked me up, his voice soft but urgent. "Don't be scared. You're safe now."
I nodded, feeling secure in his arms.
As we walked out, Sheila appeared from the shadows, looking upset and disheveled. She pointed a gun at us, her hands shaking. The second the bullet zoomed by, my head spun.
Joseph, who was holding me, spun around fast. He hugged me close to try to block the bullets with his wide back.
