“Okay, here goes. I work for a government organization of Assassins. My organization specializes in high-priority cases involving men, or women in some cases, that have done atrocious things but can escape justice because they’re wealthy and connected.” I’m shocked, speechless. At first, I think Declan’s playing some kind of trick on me, but the sober look on his face tells me otherwise. Breath hitching, I lick my lips and ask. “You're not lying, are you?” Declan shakes his head with a somber frown and tightens his fists. I can tell that he wants to touch me, but he’s unsure whether I’d be receptive. Releasing a breath, I nod my head in realization.

I slam into one of them and kick the other in the head, then twirl before the one with the knife can stab me in the neck. A gun cocking behind my head makes me stiffen. Nostrils flaring, I raise my hands and get ready to attack, but before I can, the man behind me falls unconscious onto the floor. Turning quickly, I spot one of my fellow Assassins, Phoenix, finishing off the last two men. The hallway looks like a war zone with unconscious bodies lying in various spots on the floor. As soon as the last man is down, we both face each other. “What are you doing here?” We both ask in unison.

So I found the most dangerous work I could.” She waited. “I was an assassin, Honor. A professional killer. I took contracts — targets — and I eliminated them. That was my life for the better part of a decade.” She stopped walking. He stopped too, hands in his pockets, and let her look at him. Let her take the time she needed to put it together, to decide what she thought of it. He’d learned enough about her to know that rushing her to a reaction she hadn’t fully formed would only make it worse.

I thought I could handle this on my own, thought I could bring Zephyr back without assistance because I’m her mate, but it's not enough. “Did you see the person?
