Xavier: It has been a week since Valerie's announcement. And throughout this week, she has been busy. By the time I reached the new building, the air outside was heavy with rain. The gold lettering over the door still gleamed fresh, Valerie Stone & Associates, new, defiant, hers.

I shake back into reality to find him calmly placing his things on a table at the far back of the library.

The sounds of the Academy fall away, replaced by the distant rustle of leaves and the steady beat of my own heart.

The sky above them cracked again but this time not wider. Smaller. Closing. Kaelen’s eyes widened. “It’s collapsing the doorway.” Ash blinked. “Wait… she’s sending it back?” Rex didn’t speak. So I pulled on my coat, hid my hair beneath my hood, and followed her to the arena. The place was packed with students shouting, music blasting, the crowd stomping hard enough to shake the seats. I gripped the railing as Lena helped me up the steps. We found seats near the middle. When the players rushed out, Axel Hale was impossible to miss. He was taller than most of the other players, broad-shouldered and fast. His golden hair fell in soft waves around his neck, and his hazel eyes were like a warm pool of honey. Despite that, he looked dangerous, violent and breathtakingly handsome. No wonder girls were mad about him.

I focused on my thoughts and I tried my best to recall the defense magic I learned with Sienna just in case I needed to protect myself. Three other Vampire's rapidly arrived at the scene at their customary blurry speed. They were members of the Dorwin Academy Houndcross team and they swept their peers of the ground. No overrides.” My breathing hitched. “Why does the Academy even have something like that?” Hale looked away. “Because it was built before the Academy existed.”
