They didn’t tell me exactly why they wanted to see me, just that I should present myself at the administration office. As I crossed the pediatric hallway, something unexpected happened. I stumbled upon a little blonde girl with green eyes; her face was pale, and she seemed to have difficulty breathing. I reacted instinctively and grabbed her arms before she could fall to the ground.

A playroom for when the baby got older. “The club’s been great about it,” Ghost said when he stopped by to drop off a handmade rocking chair. “Everyone’s excited.” It was true. Bree and Cassidy talked a lot yesterday and she had told her that she'd hook her up with fellow moms in the club. "My son is five years old. Do you need any instructions?” “Nah,” Janeen says, carrying the baby and the bottle away to the couch. “Lots of girls at the club bring their kids by. We’re all practiced babysitters alongside our other gig as alluring temptresses.”

“You know, I had to suffer all night because of your little boy.” I raised one eyebrow, sipping the water on the table. “How about that.” “He slept so well but he kicked, delirious, and rolled around so much that I almost fell off the bed.” I chuckled. “You've been his babysitter since he was a baby. Why are you complaining now?” Clara squinted. “Because he's getting wild. Seriously, why can't I control him?” I grinned, stirring my hot tea casually. “He complained about you too, you know.”

Jake ruffled Noah’s hair with his hand and looked toward me. “His babysitter canceled on me at the last second. She did worse than cancel she quit.” “She quit?” I asked, in surprise. Jake looked down at Noah and gave him a little wink. “Why don’t you get back to your books, kiddo?” Noah went over to his little play area and started coloring again. Jake took a step towards me.

Dad lied. My backpack felt heavier than usual, not just with books but with the weight of every broken promise. I dug my nails into my palms, trying to focus on the biting chill of the Aurelia evening instead of the tremor in my hands. New mission: survive the Sterlings. New reality: I was their charity case, Charles Sterling’s personal babysitter. His babysitter. The thought made bile rise in my throat.

Vanessa sat at the chair she'd stood up from earlier and faced him, her chest heaving up and down. "Relax.
