The runes flared awake, bright blue, rushing upward onto the spear like rising sparks.

The light illuminated the space, full of old objects and stacked boxes. As she walked, a loose floorboard creaked beneath her feet. She bent down to see what it was and, with some effort, lifted the board. She found an old book, covered in dust, with a leather cover filled with drawings of supernatural creatures. Scarlett’s heart began to race; something about the book drew her in, as if it held secrets waiting to be discovered.

I walked forward, the water sloshing in my shoes, still trying to stop myself from gagging. The floor was filled with the liquid, and then I noticed a barrel at the far end of the room. There was something off about it. The wood around it was stained, but it was definitely not wine. The clothes that had covered the opening were soaked with something too dark to be alcohol. Yes, there was wine thrown around the place, like the barrel had overflowed. But anyway, I knew there was something weird. I reached forward and pulled back the clothes, and the smell that hit me was even more foul than the smell coming from the room itself.
