The Burning
A hood obscured their face, but I could see the glint of something metallic strapped to their belt.
I stopped when there were only about twenty feet between us, my heart hammering in my chest. “Who are you?” I called out, my voice steady despite the fear gnawing at my gut.
The figure paused, their head tilting slightly, as if considering my question. Then, slowly, they reached up and pulled back their hood.
My breath caught in my throat.
It was Ben.
I almost didn’t recognize him at first, not with the beard and the hollow look in his eyes. He was thinner, his face gaunt, his skin weathered from months or years of living in the wasteland. But it was him. I would’ve known those eyes anywhere.
