You could tell from the big shelves filled with all various genres of books from top to bottom. I was interested in reading a little bit of Jane Austen today, so I settled for Pride and Prejudice. After I had got it, I made my way out of his study. I decided to have a change of scenery today, so instead of going to my room and getting cozy there, I decided to settle down on the balcony in the sitting room. The weather was beautiful today and it was a perfect day to read outside. I just quickly went to my room and grabbed a blanket before going out to the balcony.

I had already gotten started on the classical books and my goal was to slowly go through all the books in this library, not including the finance and self-help books of course. I was currently reading Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and I was falling in love with Elizabeth Bennett all over again. Although a fictional character, she was exactly the kind of woman I wished to be like. I especially liked the fact that she didn’t take shit from Mr. Darcy and wasn’t afraid to call him out on his bullshit. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for me. "Ah, a classic choice," Harold puts in, nodding appraisingly. "Pride and Prejudice is a masterpiece." Rebecca leans back in her chair, swirling her wine glass reflectively. "Personally, I find those stories a bit dull. All that talk of manners and marriage prospects. Don't you think, Pamela?"

Alana let go of our hands, darting toward the children’s section at the end of the hall. Suddenly, it was just the two of us. Standing side by side in the narrow aisle of classic literature. Gareth tucked his hands into his pockets, scanning the spines of the books with a quiet, respectful interest. "What do you usually go for, Claire?" he asked softly. His voice seemed to blend into the hum of the air conditioning. I ran my fingers along the worn spines of the hardcovers. "The classics. Jane Austen, the Brontës... anything with beautiful prose and a happy ending. I suppose I like the escape."

The one thing that she turns to when she needs an escape from her reality at the moment. “You must have something.” Gabe prombts her. “An old, worn out copy of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë that I keep in between my mattresses so that no one will find it and take it from me. Reading that book always brings me comfort.” And gives her hope. It makes her feel so much better to read it.

I wanted to read, to do something that reminded me of normalcy. I looked at my growing shelf of books and decided to pick Pride and Prejudice. It was one of my favorite books as I was a sucker for romance novels. I flipped to the first page and began. "It is a truth, universally acknowledged, that a man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife."

Elaine said, appreciating the concern. Elaine and I chatted into the night, I noticed her eyes light up as she talked about her favorite books. "Have you read any of Jane Austen's novels?" she asked me excitedly. "Yes! Pride and Prejudice is one of my all-time favorites," I replied, smiling at her enthusiasm. "Oh my gosh, I love that one too! Mr. Darcy is just so swoon-worthy," Elaine gushed, her cheeks turning pink. I laughed at her reaction. "I have to admit, I may have a bit of a crush on him myself."

I was required to do well in school, stay pure, which meant don’t hang out with boys, get classes in decorum, dancing, party planning, budget management, and everything else that was really boring to a teenage girl. My parents would fill my schedule, making it impossible for me to maintain friendships, and the only free time I had I would spend reading books. My favorites were romance novels from the 19th century. It was the exact opposite of life inside the Mystic Shadow Pack. Women in Jane Austen’s novels were fully dressed, and even showing an ankle could be scandalous, but here men and women were naked half the time, and other times they were dressed in skimpy clothes. The intense amount of focus that she had on the drawing that she was doing was well appreciated, as the adult pair was able to have a full conversation without fear that she would feel left out. Bradley couldn’t believe that anything like this was happening, as it seemed so much like some sort of novel or fairytale story that only happens to anyone in some fanciful and gorgeous world. Perhaps he was the Elizabeth Bennet to this Fitzwilliam Darcy. Though to most, the setting of his life was bleak, a stark contrast to the Yorkshire countryside that Jane Austen’s books were set on. New York City, despite all that has made it such a monument to the world, can be considered dirty or too habitual

He hadn’t seemed excited about any of it. After breakfast she excused herself. She went upstairs and sat in the den on the second floor and read a book. “Weathering heights.” She looked up and saw Jax leaning against the wall. He scanned the book cover, and she tilted it back to see what he’d read. “It’s a good one,” he said. “It’s all right,” she lied. Lola loved anything Jane Austen had written. Jax pushed off the wall and came over to sit on the couch. Lola pulled her legs closer to her chest to make room for him on the two-seater.
