At the man who had been working toward something for years and had arrived at it and was sitting in a Smith Street cafe at ten in the morning not entirely knowing what to do with the arriving. "How does it feel?" I said. "Actually." He was quiet for a long moment. "Like the thing I told you about the book when it arrived," he said. "Something that used to be inside me is now outside me." He held the coffee. "But more so. Because this time it's not just that the book exists. It's that someone else understood it the way I meant it." He held my gaze. "That doesn't always happen." "No," I said. "It doesn't."

She angles the laptop so I can read better. “Your book gave me permission to leave. I thought I was crazy for twenty years. Thank you for showing me I wasn’t.” I feel my chest tighten as she scrolls to another message. “I’m a man who controlled my wife without realizing it. Your book opened my eyes. I’m in therapy now. We’re trying to rebuild.” “Amelia,” I say softly, pulling her closer. She keeps scrolling, showing me message after message. Thousands of them, each one a story of pain finding purpose, of survival becoming strength. Her hand trembles slightly on the trackpad.

I stood before it for a moment with my hands at my sides, looking at the dark, worn cover, the spine that had no title, the pages whose edges had a faint luminescence that might have been age or might have been something else entirely. Then I picked it up. The world ended. That is the only way I can describe it, not darkness, not pain, not a simple sensation, but the total and violent ending of the world I had been standing in one moment before and my simultaneous arrival in every other world that had ever been or could have been. Some words were meant to fade, not stay. Later that night, he went for a walk along the boardwalk. A small bookstore had left its lights on, so he stepped inside. It was quiet only the faint sound of pages turning. He ran his fingers along the spines until he found it her book. “The Quiet Between Us.” He’d read it before publication, but seeing it here, on a shelf, felt different. Realer. He opened to the dedication page. “For the ones who taught me how to leave and the one who taught me how to stay.”

Damon knew my plan, so he said exceptionally carelessly, “Well, what’s it to you if my wife is willing to live the hard life with me?” Noah looked at me in disbelief. To his mind, I was a spoiled and pampered brat. There was no way I would suffer such a difficult life with a poor and powerless man. Noah’s lower lip trembled as he asked, “Ginny?” But I was unwilling to say even one word to him. I opened the door and said, “Please leave, Mr. Pratt.” It was not surprising that Noah had been able to find me. He had a vast network and resources, so it was child’s play.

If I had known that this mission would stir a dangerous encounter which was going to pose as a bizarre hinderance to me, then I wouldn't have made this journey.
