When I looked down through the window, all I could make out was the dark stretch of lawn below. The cool night wind brushed against me, raising goosebumps across my sweat-soaked skin. I stepped out onto the window ledge hesitantly. I struggled to pull the window shut behind me, then tried to jump across to the balcony of my bedroom directly below. The narrow edge of the wall beneath my feet was barely a finger's width. I had just moved one leg forward when my other foot slipped off the ledge. A sharp pain exploded at the back of my head the moment I hit the lawn. I felt my consciousness gradually fading away as I slowly closed my eyes and went out like a light.

He stood up and stretched before wandering across to the windows, where he stood gazing out into the night. Behind him, Juliette watched him anxiously, before looking back at Merlin and Sébastien, still out cold in their chairs. She was familiar with the voodoo trance, having seen Gilbert enter one many times, but she had never attempted one herself.
