“Your glyph marks—” “I know,” he gritted out, sweat dripping down his face. “They’re burning out.” “Kai, stop—” “CAN’T!” He thrust his hands forward and unleashed a blast of pure glyphlight—so bright the entire battlefield lit up. The creatures in front of him disintegrated instantly. But Kai screamed, dropping to one knee, his whole body shaking violently. Kairis sprinted toward him. “Kai! Kai, look at me—” He forced a smile, weak but stubborn. “Still alive. Not dead yet.”

Malakai's eyes darkened suddenly, dilating as a surge of unadulterated fury gripped him. The two parts of him—Kai and L—finally merged into one complete, unbreakable whole. The pain in his chest didn't vanish, but it no longer controlled him. With a low, guttural growl that sounded nothing like the man Harper had known, Kai surged forward, using the rock as leverage. He slammed his trembling free hand into Reyes' throat, pinning him against the cliff. "Did you really think you could take her from me?" Kai snarled. "Did you really think you could break what's mine?"

“Nooooo!!!” Kai reacts instantly. He drops his bow and leaps forward, pulling his sword from its sheathe and raising it above his head with two hands even as he’s soaring through the air. He lands just behind the statue that was once my dad and delivers a powerful blow with the edge of his blade directly across its back. The clang of the steel against stone rings through the air. Again and again Kai slams his sword against Dad’s stone figure. Recovered from my surprise, I race forward, wondering if Kai has suddenly gone mad, raining blows down against the statue the way he is. What does he hope to accomplish, besides dulling the edge of his blade?

Kai halted briefly—but only for a second—before disappearing into the darkness. Back in Archview, Kion stood in the council hall, hands folded behind his back. He faced Becky, who wore a new political robe—deep green silk, embroidered with the Everglade crest. “Word from the west?” she asked. “A victory,” Kion said. “Though his methods are becoming… excessive.” Becky smirked slightly. “Kai was always too emotional.” Kion gave her a sharp look. “Emotion makes alphas weak. That is why he is losing control.”

When I look at Kai, I feel that string pull taut again at the sight of him; bare-chested, wearing nothing but a black pair of loose-fitting pants that end at his calves. The tattoos all over his chest and arms look as if they were made to be there, and his long hair is hanging loose over his shoulders. My mate is so incredibly beautiful; I could stare at him all day and never tire.

The touch was so unexpected and gentle, I had to fight back the urge to draw him closer and eat his lips. I still needed to act like a poor, helpless young man. It was the only way I could get him to feel sorry for me. He brushed across my cheekbone. “You're not that childish, you know?” I blinked. “Kai…” “I left angry because I saw you touch him,” he continued. “And I wanted to break his hand. I had heard stories—whispers in the pack about the giants who ruled the shifter world—but nothing prepared me for the reality. Kai towered over Nash.
