Chapter 22: Solo Boss Fight The big black monster smashed into the concrete path with a loud crash that shook the whole wall beneath my feet. The concrete broke under its weight sending small gray rocks bouncing over the edge. Up Close, the monster was really scary. It was over nine feet tall with muscles that looked like wet leather in the dim morning light. It smelled like metal and rotting wood. It did not have hands; its long arms ended in thick curved bones that looked sharp enough to cut through a car engine. Its chest moved as it breathed, blowing a bad smell right into my face.

But here, on the peak, the sky was a swirling vortex of black and gold. And there, at the center of the bone circle, stood the Monster. It was ten feet tall, a nightmare of shifting geometry. It had the shadow of a wolf, but its limbs were made of the same silver liquid as Julian’s eyes. It didn't have a face, just a vertical slit of violet light that bled static into the air. "Kael?" I stepped forward, the dagger held low.

“Let’s play, you bastard.” The sound came like an explosion of leaves and snow: the creature burst from the gloom, a pale, glossy blur, hairless, with a thick carapace that reflected light like wet glass. Its eyes — or what appeared to be eyes — were hungry black slits, and its mouth… a gash that split all the way to its ears, where rows of teeth moved as if chewing the air. “What the…” Sasha didn’t have time to finish.
