Green torches lined the dark walls. Below the castle, a massive subterranean city hummed with life. Thousands of wolves were training and working in metal foundries. This wasn't a messy group of outcasts; it was a hidden army waiting for a spark. ​Boran led me across a swaying rope bridge. The moment my feet touched the black stone of the courtyard, a dozen heavily armed warriors surrounded us with spears.

Micah was with them too. I hated leaving them. But I couldn't fight with a baby on my chest. "She knows we're coming," Farrah said. She walked on my other side, her blade sharp, her eyes scanning the trees. "Let her know," I said. "We're not sneaking. We're announcing." --- We reached Blackspire at midnight. "The Alpha said you could wander the main halls, as long as a guard is with you." I was still afraid of moving around this fortress, but I wanted to take the chance. If Liam was telling the truth about my memory, then maybe walking these halls would trigger something. I stood up, tucked the book about the Blackwood history under my arm, and stepped out into the corridor. A tall guard fell into step behind me, his armor clanking with every movement. I walked slowly, reading as I went. The history of the Blackwood pack was fascinating and brutal. I read about the mad Alpha who had ruled with an iron fist until his own people rose up and overthrew him. It was a bloody story, but I couldn't stop
