Ethan followed his hands to the building before him. "Whoa,” he muttered under his breath, his eyes widening. Blake's house was very much larger than the others. A two stories talk building with gray painting and wide front windows. The driveway was packed with different expensive cars, a few parked crookedly along the curb like whoever had driven it had been in a rush. The floor underneath the two boys shook as music blasting faintly from inside. Ethan could see smoke curling past the cracks of the windows, fogging up the rooms they opened to.

Another five minutes of driving deeper into the trees, and then suddenly we emerged into a clearing, and I genuinely gasped. There was a massive barn. It was not like a working farm barn. This one had been completely transformed, painted a deep navy blue with string lights wrapped around every post and railing, creating this warm, glowing effect against the darkening sky. Beyond it, I could see what looked like a greenhouse, and beyond that, rows and rows of something, but I couldn't quite make out from this distance. Miles pulled into a small parking area and cut the engine, then he turned to me with that excited smile again. "So. I just want to say welcome to Harvest Moon."

Blake I walk out of my haze of powers onto a level, gravel road lined by farmland. Streaks of deep navy and fading violet paint the sky as stars twinkle into view, a masterpiece I’d stop to inspect if I didn’t have somewhere to be. Along either side of the valley, houses built along the mountainside shine like their starry counterparts, and a few farmhouses are spread out, but the animals in the barns and sheds are silent, sleeping.

The kind of barn that has been there for a hundred years. "Why are we stopping," I say. "Because I want to look at the barn." "The barn." "The barn. Look at it. Really look at it." I look at the barn. It is red. Faded. The roof is sagging. One of the windows is broken. There is a tree growing next to it. A maple. Big. Older than the barn, maybe. "What am I looking for," I say. "Nothing. Just look." I look. The sun is behind the barn. The light is coming through the broken window. The tree is casting a shadow. The field is full of wildflowers. Yellow and purple and white.

I stayed at the cemetery all night. … I got home the next day around noon. The swing in the yard had been cut down and replaced with an easel. The pond my daughter loved had been filled in. The red goldfish she raised were now stuffed specimens for Pete's paintings. When she saw me frozen in the yard, Jody's face flushed with guilt. She grabbed my hand.

The sprawling front porch beckons with its rocking chairs and a porch swing, offering a perfect spot to admire the surrounding fields and breathe in the fresh country air. “I missed this place.” Blake sighed deeply and muttered as he fell back against the living room couch. His phone blared off and he finally picked it up upon seeing the caller was Zane. “Blake, are you out of your Goddamn mind? Where the f2ck are you?” Zane yelled at the top of his lungs. Blake sighed again, “At the farmhouse,” He replied, “I just need some time alone so don’t tell anyone, and don’t bring unnecessary guards here,” he warned.

Chapter One Hundred And Forty Seven: (When Graves Are Still Warm) NINETEEN HOURS LATER The moon loomed high above the pack house, it's silver glow casting an ethereal sheen upon the freshly dug graves behind the building. Blake stood at the edge of the gathering, his boots caked in mud, his clothes still clinging to him from the rain that had battered the grounds for hours before finally retreating. The air was sharp with the scent of wet soil and death.

~CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY FOUR~ BLAKE’S POV Since we arrived at the abandoned park, I haven’t been able to stop pacing. The place is quiet and calm. The wind moves through the broken trees and rusted structures, carrying the dry scent of dust and old metal. It’s the kind of place people forgot existed years ago. Perfect for hiding. But something about it doesn’t feel right. I’ve been waiting for a response from Eric concerning my men stationed at the mountain, yet my phone remains silent.

That even though the wind is cold I feel touching my skin, I still feel warm. I tried to calm down by taking several deep breaths. If I realize how close our bodies are, I won't be able to observe my beautiful view. Waldo occupied a large part of my mind so it wouldn't help if I understood even the fast beating of my heart. I blinked my eyes a couple of times to help my vision focus on the scenery ahead of me. It was a two-story barn colored maroon and was surrounded by a white wooden fence. The entire yard is large enough to fit five barns together. There is also a fountain in front and on the side there is a small playground consisting of a swing, a slide, and even a sandbox.
