My mother didn’t speak, she just simply let the cloth fall away. The air charged more. The pressure could be felt. Kael had a horrified face staring at the book. It was entwined in vines— Blood vines. The raw power from the book pressed against my skin, my lungs, my bones—everywhere.

Helia had been able to piece together part of what was happening, but there were still so many things that hadn’t been explained. After cleaning off the grime, and sweat, and blood of everything that had happened, she applied more herbs to her wounds and settled in to pour over all the writings she had previously found on demons and blood magic.
