The guard studied me for a long moment. Then he reached for his radio. I stood at those gates and I did not fidget and I did not look away and my wolf stood straight inside me for the first time in seven years. The radio crackled. The guard looked up. Alpha Rhys says to bring her in, he said. He did not sound surprised. And that was the part that should have reassured me. It did not.

The night they arrived, he even posted something online to make it clear he thought I was copying him. In our seventh year, the gift was the divorce agreement. Seven years, and looking back, the distance between us had grown the entire time without me noticing. Two notifications came through on my phone. One was from Vera that read, “Sean, nine tomorrow morning. Do not forget.” The other was from Austin. “Last night of our seven-day romance. Vera says she wants to make it a night to remember.” My eyes stayed on the paintings for one last moment before I switched off the screen.

Another heavy pause hung in the air. "The Crescent Watch." He lifted his eyes, his gaze settling on Abram with a terrifying clarity. "Four names," he noted. "One truth." Abram's smile returned to his face. "Exactly," he agreed.

I had to bust out. “Are you going to let me out?” I asked. He nodded and stepped back. “Of course. As soon as you give me a blood oath that you’ll do as I say.” Damn it. A blood oath was binding. I couldn’t beat that. “I’m a little dizzy since I haven’t eaten all day. I can hardly make a such a decision on an empty stomach. It won’t be legitimate.” Seth ground his teeth. “You’re testing my patience.” “A blood oath is no good if I pass out after you cut me open!”

Ben rose to his feet. Seeing our steadfast stance, Richmond realized there was no room for compromise. He gnashed his teeth and abruptly stood, unexpectedly seizing Ben's neck while holding a sharp blade to it. "I'm sorry, Mr. Hale. I have no choice.
