MOON OF ASHES
They stood calmly, ears forward, as though waiting for a new command.
Across the chamber the Keeper had fallen to one knee. The staff lay beside it, its tip dark. When it raised its head the mask looked cracked, hairline fractures running from eye socket to jaw.
“What have you done?” it asked, but this time its voice was thin, almost human.
Ava pushed herself upright. “We shared it,” she said simply. “We swore a new oath. Not one life for all the rest, but all of us for each other.”
The Keeper’s fingers curled. “That was not permitted.”
